In the Undomly thread, while listing the various geeky RPGs I've played, I started thinking about some of the many characters I have played over the years.I thought it might be fun to share some of these. Just tell us a bit about the character, and some of the things that make him or her so memorable.

I'm going to start with one of my all-time favourites (he is also very fondly remembered by the other players).

Skreech Foulbreath
He was a 1/2-orc fighter/priest who worshiped Osiris (in AD&D terms, Osiris is a Lawful Good deity of the dead). Now in this particular campaign, when your PC (Player Character) died and you rolled up a new one, the DM quickly and somewhat clumsily inserted the new PC into the dungeon to meet up with the others. In Skreech's case he decided that I had been trapped at some time in the distant past and chained to a wall and put under some form of temporal stasis field to prevent me from aging or dying. OK, more than just a little hokey, but I can go with it...I asked him if the PC was aware of the passage of time while so entrapped, and he said yes.

Aha! says I to myself...I've found the schtick!. I figured if I had been chained to a wall for centuries, aware of the passage of time, I would go insane, so...Skreech was insane. Being a worshiper of the god of the dead, and not dying for all those years, he became convinced that he had somehow displeased his god, and therefore not been allowed to die and get his reward for his devoted service. So his aim in life was to die. I also decided that another aspect of his insanity was that rather than being Lawful GOOD, he would be a very twisted sort of Lawful EVIL, that believed himself to be good. Under the rules for clerics, being the wrong alignment means you only have access to the lowest level of spells, which Skreech took as yet further proof of Osiris' displeasure.

His twisted view was such that his answer to almost any situation was to kill whoever he was dealing with. If he thought you were bad...he would want to kill you so you could go be judged by Osiris and get the punishment you deserved. Conversely, if you were perceived to be good, he would want to kill you so you could get your reward. This led to some very amusing situations.

One time he bought a chariot. One of the other players asked if I had checked it out to make sure it wasn't a lemon. Screech's reply was that he hadn't (he knew nothing of chariots, he just wanted one to ride around in), but that there was no need, because the merchant wouldn't  try cheat him. When the other player asked why he was so certain of that, he replied "Because if he cheats me I will kill him". the chariot salesman then spoke up quickly to point out that the chariot I had been looking at was just for display purposes, and the one I would actually be purchasing was in the back of the lot..."just let me bring it around for you sir"

Another time, when two of the city watch rescued a peasant girl, his reaction was to attempt to kill the watchmen on the spot, so they would be judged right then before they had a chance to do anything bad to muck up their karma so to speak. The other players had to physically restrain him. On several occasions they had to knock him unconscious to prevent him from "rewarding" somebody.

In this campaign, when the PCs were in the main city (which the DM had detailed exhaustively) you always had to tell the DM exactly where in town you were staying, so he could arrange various nasty surprises for you. So when Skreech arrived at the town and the DM asked where he was staying, I answered "the graveyard, to protect it from undead".

Well he didn't like that at all, because that wasn't anywhere he had thieves and such to harass me, so he said that I wasn't allowed to stay there. "Screw that" says Skreech, and takes up residence. He couldn't be reasoned with, because he was convinced he was doing Osiris' will, and he couldn't be effectively threatened because he wanted to die...so in the end (i.e. after 20 or so watchmen had been dispatched while trying to evict him) they just gave up and he was appointed the official guardian of the cemetery and received a salary from the town.

Because his aim was to die and go before Osiris, he was stupidly reckless...but also incredibly effective. He died...a lot! With frightening regularity.  But every time he died, the party would bring him back to life. And of course, having died and returning to life, was to him just further proof that he was unworthy, so his insanity deepened. The other players brought him back again and again, often at enormous risk and expense, just because they thought he was so fucking much fun. Several of their PCs died in their efforts to resurrect Skreech, at least one permanently, but they never wavered in their dedication to bring him back "just one more time".

And every time they brought him back he was even crazier and even more determined to die and stay dead. It was fun to play a raving homicidal maniac who was convinced he was the paragon of virtue, and that the kindest way to repay a favour was to kill the one who had done you the favour. Good times, indeed.

That was Skreech Foulbreath. What about yours? Tell us about one of your favourite characters in one of your RPGs (online counts as well)

since I have played so many characters in game as GM and Player it is tough for me to decide "who" my Fave has been. so I am just gonna go with my most current Nom de Plume and say my 8th level goblin Bard savage skald Variant
why a bard let alone why a goblin ........good question he crept into my skull oneday after my cleric got "truely Stoned"( fucking medusas gaze) and has been wrecking havock and been a boon and pain to his Party since they found him
a greedy lil snot whos creedo is " well if I get first dibs then they can't cheat me " and has so far Bet (and lost) his body to a sphinx , been responsible for countering an entire murder of harpies song abilities and still somehow still manages to become the butt of every Broadway style musical gay joke that is badied about the Table ( yes I the player am gay but thru the GM's Mythos gomblins kinda asexually reproduce in huge steaming piles of garbage )we shall have to see if the sphinx * lousy schemeing wretch that she is* will keep her promise and devour the goblin

way back in antiquity i played AD&D. my fave character was a chaotic good MUT. she was the offspring of the demon asmodeous and a barmaid, and had black hair with a white streak and red red eyes. daddy never really acknowledged her. she was madly drawn to a paladin (opposites attract?) and was always trying to tempt him. sigh. the mists have time (and divorce) have obscured most of her from my memory, but i remember chaotic good was great fun to play. though not nearly so much as your raving maniac!

CoastDaddy, your goblin sounds like a real shit distruber, I've seen a few of those in my day, they can really liven up the game.
Angel, I simply have to know...did the paladin ever succumb to temptation?

Here's another of mine that the old gang still talk about.

Gaston Phoebus, Hero at Large.
I had high hopes for him, I had his character all worked out and he was going to rock! I even made up little business cards with his name and title on it, to hand out to the other player when he joined the party.

Alas, he didn't last long. He died very permanently, very quickly, didn't last an entire session, but by God he died well. The party was being chased by a huge horde of trolls (which regenerate damage, so the only way to actually kill them is with acid or fire). At the point the trolls showed up, the party wizards were out of spells, everybody was banged up and in rough shape, so it looked like it was the end for the group.

Because the party was loaded down with loot, the trolls were gaining on them and there was no way to prevent them form catching the party and tearing them limb from limb. No way did you say? No chance? Bah! Gaston Phoebus to the rescue!

So he charged straight at the trolls and engaged them while the rest of the party fled. Gaston was hacking them to bits, but of course he was doomed. But he had a secret weapon, he had a nearly unused Necklace of Missiles. He plucked off all the remaining beads and threw them at his feet, firing off 50+ some dice of fireballs all at once. Blasted the trolls out of existence. Unfortunately he was blasted out of existence right along with them, but that is, after all is said and done, part and parcel of the hero's trade.

And, more importantly, in the City of Bray, the bards still sing of the glorious last stand of Gaston Phoebus, Hero at Large

close but no cigar. even after i had given up a powerful magic staff, and indebted myself to a wily goddess to rescue him. ungrateful bastard!

as i remember he retired as a paladin, probably couldn't hack it, gave up on his vows for a flipping wide-hipped bosomy barmaid and hopefully grew fat and bald with a shrew of a wife

Oh, gosh...I've been gaming since I was 17, so I've had quite a few characters over the years.

I love AD&D, White Wolf, L5R...the list goes on. I especially enjoy LARP (Live-Action Role-Play) Years ago, I belonged to The Camarilla, White Wolf's official fan club. I played the LARP version of Vampire: The Masquerade. One of my more memorable characters was a Malkavian named Adrienne. For those not familiar with the game, all Malks have some sort of mental derangement. It can be anything from Tourette's Syndrome to schizophrenia. Adrienne started with one and gained a couple more through the course of three years of play. This chica was not right in the head.

There are two types of Malks -- the first type are the "bunny slippers" who run arround in PJs carrying teddy bears and acting disgustingly cutesy in their insantity. Then there are the creepy Malks. These are the nuts who are either downright dangerous or who are just so far out there they give other people the willies. For dedicated players of Malks, it's a point of honor to be called creepy.

At a regional LARP event, where players from several states congregated to play together, Adrienne was chosen to represent her city at the Princes' Symposium. Now, Adrienne's outfit is important to note. She despises men but goes out of her way to flash a lot of skin. I was wearing a pair of denim short-shorts, a black tank top with spaghetti straps, and the Bitch Boots. The Bitch Boots are thigh-high and made of black vinyl. They lace all the way from ankle to thigh and have five-inch spike heels. I'm short, only 5'3", but the boots make my legs look much longer. They get *lots* of attention. They also change how I walk. There's no such thing as running, or even walking quickly in these things unless I want to break an ankle. So, by necessity, I have to walk slowly. The height of the heels makes my hips sway more. The overall effect is very seductive.

I was in the conference room of the hotel the club had rented. Adrienne was hanging out with some other Malks while we waited for the main event to start. Along comes another player named Tim. I have no idea what his character's name was but I was very familiar with the player. This is one of the guys who had been in the club almost from Day One. He had the membership class to make REALLY powerful characters. Characters that could squash Adrienne like a bug with little more than a wave of his hand. He was also one of the most experienced players in the U.S. at the time so he wasn't fazed easily.

He approached Adrienne, grabbed her hand and started shaking it vigorously, and proceeded to ask if she'd ever committed Diablery. Diablery is the most grievous sin any vampire can commit and the penalty is instant death. Asking the question was beyond rude. Plus, Adrienne hates to be touched. It's a major issue for her and guaranteed to piss her off.

Adrienne just smiled and shook his hand some more. I confess, I have an expressive face. As Adrienne, I can smile without it reaching my eyes. At the same time, I let my eyes go slightly unfocused, as though I'm looking *through* the other person. I kept hold of Tim's hand, even when he tried to take it back. I also stepped close enough to him to seriously invade his personal space. Meanwhile, I dropped my voice to a low purr and asked several questions such as, "Don't you think that's an awfully personal question?" and "Why do you want to know; do you plan to kill me?" Adrienne never did give him an answer. However, he started backing up...and backing up...with Adrienne following him, still holding onto his hand. When he finally managed to extricate himself, he took off. Quickly.

The next day, I was volunteering to work the sign-in table. Tim started toward the table, stopped ten feet away, and pointed at me.

"You!"

"Yeah?"

"You play that Malkavian, Adrienne."

"Yeah."

"You're CREEPY!!!!"

Best. Compliment. EVER.  I did the happy dance all the way home.

my fav' character so far was in an AD&D game. i played a cat that was "awakened" by a druid's spell, and ended up as the sorcerer's familiar.
All of the party started out with 2,500 GP worth of gear. Being a cat, my gear came in the form of a very pricey collar.
The party rouge kept trying to steal the collar from me.
You'd be surprised how much damage a housecat can do in AD&D !

i forgot to begin with " No, shite, there i was ..."
