For just starting out to see if you might like to go further with rope there's nothing wrong with the really cheap stuff. But if you want to go further, artificial rope just doesn't provide the sophistication that natural fibers do in terms of drape or knotting ability.

I start with a shoe string and end with 200' of military repelling rope...bondage need not be so complicated...;)

Only thing I can think of is if you were doing a weight bearing harness or suchlike, if you get it wrong it will tighten faster than hemp, I find hemp will still slip and tighten if you don't do it right anyway.
