For just starting out to see if you might like to go further with rope there's nothing wrong with the really cheap stuff.

But if you want to go further, artificial rope just doesn't provide the sophistication that natural fibers do in terms of drape or knotting ability.

The other reason we're not investing in hemp is that I have really strong hay fever. And the odds are that I'll be allergic to all that expensive rope. Nylon doesn't set off my allergies.

In that case, you might want to consider Hempex. That´s also a synthetic fibre rope, but one with aesthetics closer to hemp and if treated for bondage with enough friction to use most friction based shibari techniques.

I start with a shoe string and end with 200' of military repelling rope...bondage need not be so complicated...;)

My advice is you learn how to coil it up properly whichever you go with, nothing worse to spoil the mood than fighting with a massive knotted lump!

And yeah, nylon is super shitty rope. Which is why someone with a clue would never use it. But you have to learn somehow. Please let's try to remember there are people who have never tied a knot before.

Why do you think it is so bad? Sure it's a bit slippy to knot but it's still strong and feels nice. Am I missing something or am I just a tight Yorkshireman? Only thing I can think of is if you were doing a weight bearing harness or suchlike, if you get it wrong it will tighten faster than hemp, I find hemp will still slip and tighten if you don't do it right anyway.
