I kinda heard that some big cities had those, but not out in the sticks were we lived.

Does anyone remember the first time they got "cable" and "HBO"?

I remember my aunt and uncle splurged and got Gill Cable, otherwise known as The G Channel.  We'd go over there on Sunday afternoons to watch the featured movie.

I was in college.  We had one of those cable boxes where you could open them up, and tune in the premium channels with a small screwdriver.

I remember the A/B switch for cable.  You got X number of channels on A, and then you had to get up and flick the switch to B to get the rest.

For the guys ... remember when the "adult channels" where kinda-sorta visible, all twisty and stuff, but occasionally would clear up and you could see ... gasp! ... actual naked female flesh?

Hey don't limit that to just the guys!  I'd twist my head to try to make out the snowy, warped figures you could hardly see, just for a few glimpses.  [:D]

I was going to tell her about rotary dial, but I was afraid she'd have to be hospitalized. [&:]

I have a rotary phone. It's always a big hit with company - they love to make phone calls on it. It's one of those heavy, black phones....last night I actually had to let the handle swing down and spin to uncoil the cord. It was great.

....sorry to say, I actually bought it at an antique store.

Bakelite phones from the 40s are very popular and collectible... I used to carry them in my shop ( I had an antiques store once upon a time)

My twin brother collects them, I have a few, and old deskside phone, a candlestick or two, (western electric, stromberg carlson) an old oak hand crank wall. and a couple bakelites.

Those old phones suck the life out of the phone line, have you ever used one while sharing a three way phonecall?

Isaac Hayes was a musician and actor, the shaft is what you get by not knowing that. Can you dig it?

LOL.

I made a baloney sandwich for lunch today. Yes, I know it's spelled bologna, but baloney is more fun. Anyway, it brought back memories of school lunch, eaten out of a metal lunchbox (I'm kicking my dear departed mother for throwing out that Beatles lunchbox I had in 3rd grade, it's worth some bucks now....), and drinking milk out of the matching thermos. Sitting at those long tables and benches that the janitor unlocked and let down from the wall.

OR, going through the lunch line, plastic pastel-colored sectioned trays, milk in a small carton, unless you were one of those crazy kids who didn't drink milk. You got "orange drink". On green bean day, Mrs. Flickinger walking up and down between the benches muttering, "Eat those beans! Eat those beans!" The good thing about green bean day was that it was also pizzaburger day [:)]

Yup, you should have seen me trying to buy my last cell phone.

"Do you have a phone that you can use to make a call on, that rings and nothing else?"

"Why Maam, why would you want a phone that only did that?"

Or when your remote for your TV was at the end of a 30 foot cord?

When you ran to the corner store to buy smokes for your parents and got them each a pack, then got yourself a Hershey bar and a Coke with the change.

GreedyTop -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/30/2011 10:17:58 AM)

yep yep!!

*I* was the remote...

cigarette machines, juke boxes with actual 45s on them, and in some places, the tabletop jukes..

And GT I am right there with you. In fact I think I am officially an antique at this point.[8D]

You know you are getting old when you realize that you get more red tape getting a pack of cigars today than you got at 18 when buying a gun.

I LOVE those tabletop jukeboxes, with the flapping metal "pages", lol. There are still some diners out there that have them, at least up in New Jersey, last time I was there.

In like 2nd grade we used to take guns to school for show and tell, and nobody flipped out.

No, but you can get them rewired for modern use

mnottertail -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/30/2011 10:37:45 AM)

yeah, we just change out the ends, and clip a resistor in there, so they stay original guts.

I remember when I was in kindegarten and we would be able to skin the bullies alive with our father's hunting knife and we would get a gold star

mnottertail -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/30/2011 10:40:28 AM)

LOL.   I bet I would not have fared well in your slam book.

GreedyTop -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/30/2011 10:41:39 AM)

Nobody ever brought a gun into any of my schools but lots of people had them in their cars  columbine would have ended differently then.  As far as bullies were concerned if you couldn't stop him you and four of you friends could.
