I am really fucking old!!! Half of the stuff y'all are talking about I don't remember because it was waaaaay after my time. We lived in a fairly large city--Seattle--so I didn't see carts & horses, but our milk was delivered in glass bottles with the cream on top. We didn't get a tv until I was in 4th grade. Before that we listened to the radio. My mom listened to the soaps in the daytime & I listened to the serials in the evenings before bed. It was so cool to go into their room & get on their big bed--full size was the biggest back then--& listen to The Lone Ranger & The Great Gildersleeve in the dark.

Once we got the tv, we were only allowed half an hour a night, unless I could get Father to turn on George Gobel, then we could watch for a whole hour. If I wanted to watch American Bandstand--the original after-school special--I had to go to the neighbor's house. Her mother let us watch all the tv we wanted.

We had a tetherball in the yard & every summer we'd set up the badminton net & play with shuttlecocks with real feathers on them. My Father drove a Model A for awhile & we'd have to back up steep hills. Then he bought my mom a 1950 Austin of England. Brand new!!!

Today I was behind a driver who had his hand out the window & I kept thinking he was signalling that he was slowing down & then for a left turn. I realized that he was probably too young to remember the hand signals we used because cars didn't have turn signals on them. And when it was hot out, we rolled down the windows & drove 60mph. That was air conditioning.

What can I say??? We were rich, rich I tell you!!!! I remember one of the 2 times in my life that I knew how much money my Father made. The first time was in the 50's & he'd gotten a raise & he was sooooo excited, because he never ever thought he'd make that much money!!! He was grossing $100/week. The next time I knew what he made was after he retired in the 80's & he was doing consulting work. He was making $100/hour. LOL

I met an older Man again at a funeral recently. The farmer, where we always used to go and actually lived there for a time.

His brother in law just died and we were talking about smoking. The dead BIL and learned the hard way not to light a cigarette when his oxygen was on. The SECOND time convinced him. Talk about a quick shave. Well the BIL farmer said that he quit smoking when cigarettes went up to 33 cents a pack.

The services came and I paid as much attantion to that as I do to, well actually I wouldn't know. But we talked later and I said "You know they're about 33 cents per cigarette now". I may be old but there are still a few older. Fewer and fewer actually. What happens when I am the oldest ? Someday everyone else will be dead. I will really be alone on a crowd. And my crowd has (had) an average life expectancy of 35 years. I got fifteen free years. Borrowed time ? Fuck it, I'll file bankrupcy. It's like magic.

I remember buying cigarettes at 20 cents a pack. I used to tell people that when they went up to a quarter I'd quit. Of course I didn't. But when I quit in 1982, I was still getting them from the rez for $1 a pack.

You know you're getting old when you find the very first kid you ever babysat for on Facebook and discover he's now a doctor, is married and has 2 kids.

Damn....where's my cane!

The one kid, when he was two we videotaped him opening Christmas presents. ( Mom was pleased with her new phone, the kind that hangs on the wall ! ) Years later we played the tape and he asked where his little sister was. His little sister WASN'T, not yet. Now he has graduated college, gotten married and moved away. He is no longer on his Parent's credit card, they're on his ! His little sister smashed her first car about four years ago.

You know you're getting old when you realize the kids you babysat are undoubtedly grandparents now.
