Thank you for that. My sunscreen goes on before the makeup. It's just part of the routine now.

Pretty decent pictures, if somewhat short on the ambiguous cases.

They miss the most useful tip of all, though: pay attention to your skin over time.

If you've got a digital camera, picking up a reticle might be a very inexpensive bit of life insurance.

Thanks for sharing that--and for those who don't already, going for an annual "skin" checkup/exam with a dermatologist is absolutely essential.  I'm making my first appt soon-- my parents go every year, and they just found evidence of types of cancerous/pre-cancerous skin lesions on both my parents.  Both routine--both caught in time--and removed thankfully.

It sold me.  One more dr appt to add to the growing list

Good info to have.
I had a couple suspicious moles removed last year (both benign!). That slideshow makes it pretty obvious that you want to catch these things early.

This is a very informative slide show, and comes at a perfect time too.
What I had thought for months was just a little mole turned out to be basal cell carcinoma.
I am having the Mohs procedure done this Monday to have it removed. (ouchies!)

Don't do what I did and think you are safe with just the sunscreen.
See a dermatologist at least once a year, and sooner if anything seems suspicious.

Agreed on the yearly checkups being essential. I was very lucky my family physician caught a mole that did not look right to him during a visit for a sinus infection. He called the dermatologist and scheduled me an exam the next day (usually a 3 month wait to get in). It turned out to be melanoma. Luckily it was caught before it spread to the lymph nodes. 100% curable when caught early!

Wow, that's scary. 

I work in a pathology lab and see countless skin cancer specimens and yet I've never had a dermatological examination.  I'm making an appointment on Monday!

And don't think a regular sunscreen does the job.

Most brands will only prevent you from getting a sun burn, and will dramatically increase the odds of skin cancer.

A sun burn is a symptom. Suppressing it is like using a pain killer before anal sex or fisting. We don't exactly encourage that approach here, as a rule. Instead, wearing clothing that absorbs UVA properly is the key. If that gets too hot, put a wicking fabric under it, and then drink a bit more water. If clothing is intolerable, proper sun screen is rated for its UVA stopping capacity, and does not absorb into the skin.
