Post 75 stunning pic.

The holiday was a bummer for me.   I phoned a good friend in Ontario,  usually all upbeat.   She was crying,  her aunt passed away she just learned about it a few hours ago... she did not want to talk.

The falls are called Shannon Falls, it is spectacular, wild, roaring, churning water, nature at its finest, and the mountain there is called The Chief and people go mountain climbing on it and down the sheer cliff.
Yes, I liked going to Granville Island market too but a little hard to park there when its a busy weekend. There is the Granville Island Brewery there too, a few blocks away. [sm=chug.gif]

Yes, that's it - Shannon Falls - thanks!  Spectacular, for sure.  We just walked a simple path around them, nothing so daring as mountain climbing.  We were at Granville Island during the week, so it wasn't so crowded.  We ate at The Cat's Meow, which was most excellent.   Missed the brewery but the Cat's Meow did a great bloody mary for breakfast.  [:D]

Thank you.    We still talked a few minutes.  I think she will need to get her mind off of it all.

Now you are just trying to be funny.

Uhm....why do you think we celebrate Canada on July1st?  In 1867, The British North American Act united the British Colonies into what is now known as Canada. Canada day is a celebration for becoming our own separate country with full autonomy from British rule.

Arpig -> RE: O Canada! What makes it special to you? (7/2/2011 10:25:13 AM)

Close but not really. We didn't technically gain full independence from Great Britain until 1982. In 1867 we became a Dominion, effectively a self governing colony. We had full control of our internal affairs, but Britain still had substantial control of our external affairs, and the Parliament in London was the ultimate court of appeal. Our constitution was an act of the British Parliament, and therefore only they could alter it. When we made an amendment, it had to pass all the measures here, and then go to London to be officially amended.

I could go on to explain, if anybody is interested, the rest of the process of gradual devolution of powers from London to Ottawa, that led to the repatriation in 82. You'll note that phrase: repatriation of the constitution. That is because before we could make our own constitution, the parliament in Britain had to pass a motion assigning the BNA Act to the Canadian parliament, thereby allowing us to amend it in our Constitution Act. That process, whereby the BNA Act was sent to Canada, so to speak, is why it was called "repatriation" i.e. sending back it home.

ETA: they called REpatriation, because technically the BNA Act was passed in Charlottetown at the famous conference that led to confederation, then sent to the UK. so in 82, it was being sent "back".

See, its when you say shit like this that I am certain you are engaging in some heavy herbal remedies, and that you have a particularly potent source of said remedies.

Remember, pass it from the left-hand side!

How come all the paperwork in CA mentions the Queen?

She should get over herself.  I say this because I once banked up there.

Because she is the fucking Queen of Canada! She's the head of state. Hunky I have explained this to you many a time, there is no dire conspiracy involved, there's no secret agenda, or hidden power ploy. She is the Queen of Canada. We're really quite open about it. Canada is a monarchy. This is one of those "teenie weenie unimportant cosmetic differences" I mentioned a while ago.

It's no different than your land title referencing the state of PA.[8|]

Spark me up another dude, I need to catch up!

I quite like my Canada having a Queen... so its not her getting over herself at all.
...she even comes to visit once in a while.. which is nice cuz you never want a guest to actually stay very long or come around too often... [:)]

Thanks for the clarification Arpig!

O Canada! What makes it special to you?

From an old Doonesbury strip, sung to "My Favorite Things" --

Tall whispering pines and hot maple syrup,
Red-coated Mounties perched high in their stirrups,
Hard-rubber hockey pucks shot from the wings,
These are a few of our favorite things.
