I am thinking about getting a Sjanbok and was wondering what experiences others had with them ?

littlewonder -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 1:21:59 AM)

the ex dom had one...the nastiest thing ever! If not careful it can break bones. It's a toy that i never ever want to feel ever again.

Pssssst! If you mean the South African style whip, it's sjambok, with an "M".

And I know nothing about them except that I'd like to keep it that way. If Hanners reads this and gets one, I am going to hold you personally responsible.

thanks for that

they're awesome, but the person using it has to have an idea of what s/he's doing. they can break skin and bones really easily. it takes very little force to get a good amount of pain with them.
i really like them because they create a more deep-down pain than surfacey pain, like paddles. they're a weird combination of stingy and thuddy, in fact i'm not sure i'd really call them stingy... it's a "richer," more brilliant, more complex sensation than what i've associated as being "stingy," and you feel it all the way to your bones. =p

a sjambok is nothing to haphazardly mess around with, but reeeeally very fun, as long as the person using it isn't trying to hit home runs -- doing that can SERIOUSLY injure a person.

Now I need to persuade Master to find a sjambok expert....sounds fab! [:D]

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 5:46:36 AM)

they are! ^_^ the modern ones (you mostly find ones made by Cold Steel) are plastic, and you can find them at some sporting goods stores or order them online. they're ridiculously cheap for how awesome they are.  people are promoting them here in the US as a form of self-defense, but a lot of people get snippy about them because they were used pretty brutally against people during apartheid in South Africa.

ETA -- they are VERY prone to wrapping, so that's something to watch for. it's difficult to find an "expert," there aren't any victor tellas of sjambokery as far as i know, but there are other more experienced people you can talk to, and they'll explain ways they used to practice. the number one thing to know is just that it really doesn't take nearly the amount of force that a person might be used to using with whacky implements.

Lucylastic -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 5:52:01 AM)

there are few people I would trust with one.
One man I did trust, showed me the damage that could be done...
I save the thoughts of using one on people I really want to hurt. and not in a RACK or SSC way

myotherself -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 6:52:50 AM)

Master has used a single tail before, but I doubt he'd call himself an expert with that, so I'm assuming this new whippy bundle of fun-ness might take a lot more practice. That should keep him occupied for a while [:D]

Oh hell, they are fab. In fact the sjambok takes a lot less practise than a signle tail and are a lot easier to handle, but he might want to practise on a pillow or so, just to make sure he gets a feel for it, they pack much more force than you'd think.

myotherself -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 11:17:43 AM)

You're giving yourself a pressie for his bday?

myotherself -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 11:59:27 AM)

ermmmm...YES!!! [:D]

strangedesire -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 12:18:48 PM)

Cold Steel has videos online of a guy using a sjambok to cut a watermelon in half. I want one, but it's more weapons-lust than toy-lust.

Buzzzz -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 12:23:16 PM)

i got one coming..on $13 on ebay, shipping included.

myotherself -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 12:25:19 PM)

I watched the video too SD - looked way cool! [:D]

And Buzzzz...I refuse to be jealous! [:o]

edited cos emoticon died

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 2:07:16 PM)

I love my sjambok, bit it IS weapon lust. They don't take a lot of practice, and are a lot of bang for the buck, as it were. I want a real hide one, but the guy in S Africa who sells them on ebay has only had long ones.

myotherself -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 2:25:27 PM)

OK - I'm going to ask the obvious question. Does size matter? And which size would you recommend?

And you at the back, sitting sniggering...grow up! [:D]

BurntKitty -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 4:25:11 PM)

I like mine. My tushie isn't as fond, though....

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Sjanbok (7/17/2011 5:38:39 PM)

I don't have binocular vision Bunny, so I prefer shorter toys! Lack of depth perception can be annoying!
