Okay for those of you who have read the Ender books, what is the actual order? The guy who helped me gave me Ender's Game and Speaker For the Dead, which is fine but then there is Ender's Shadow which is apparently parallel to Ender's Game. Now I'm confused, which should I read first, Speaker For the Dead or Ender's Shadow?

I'd suggest reading Ender's Game and then Speaker for the Dead before Ender's Shadow. Ender's Shadow, while parallel to Ender's Game in internal chronology, deals with different protagonists. And I generally find reading things in publication order to be less jarring (less change in the author's voice, for instance).

Think of ender's game and ender's shadow as the same story but not exactly the same. The shadow series mostly takes place in ender's absence. While the main series follows him. Enders's game, speaker for the dead, xenocide and then children of the mind. Those are the books of the main series. The shadow series start with Ender's shadow, shadow of the hegemon, shadow puppets and then shadow of the giant. As long as you read the series in order it doesn't matter whether you start with ender's game or ender's shadow. Just read them in order. Both stories together give you the whole picture.

Your brain won't be the same afterward.

Thanks blacksword, that's exactly what the guy who gave me the books has done so that's what I'll do. Plus this way I have two series to read. [;)] Now I just need to find a list of the books in order.

Yeah I saw that when I was looking for a list of the books and it made my head hurt. It also didn't help [>:]

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. Do you happen to know of or have a list of the proper order of the books?

Zephy..as he said:

Enders Game series: Enders's game, speaker for the dead, xenocide and then children of the mind.

Enders Shadow series: Ender's shadow, shadow of the hegemon, shadow puppets and then shadow of the giant.

I must have had a gray moment, for some reason I thought there was a whole long series. My bad.

Thanks blacksword and Monkey!

Love.
Enders.
Series.

LOVE.

When you are done, ship them over here.  I've not read the Shadow series - I did read Enders Shadow which took my brain to a whole new place!  In truth I don't like SciFi - too much trying to figure out too many not-yet-figured-out stuff.  But, and here is the thing.... Enders Game series could be set in any time period with any civilization.  Just different details.  Kind of like Star Wars that way - it was basically good guys versus bad guys.  Enders Game is much more complex philosophically, but the basic premise is movable.  To me, taking such a malleable story and making it interesting is what makes it such a joy to read.  It's fascinating wayyyyyyyy beyond the sci fi aspect.  (IMBO).  :)

(as an aside - I would have loved to be a therapist/researcher in any of those books!)

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Ender Series (7/20/2011 5:30:08 AM)

Deal! Then you can return them in person - but I'll need your address I errrr misplaced it. I'm reading the Introduction for Ender's game in which he explains (among other things) how he came to write that book. Very interesting!
