Dogies playing - the blanket got reduced to shreds in a tug of war, thank heavens for charity shops....

Taylor got really mad at my husband for putting his toys up where he couldn't reach them. He glared at him and snubbed him for three days till I figured out what was wrong and put the toy box back on the floor.

Newest member of my family.  My son's dog, Skye.  She's a mix, not completely sure of what, but she has one blue eye, one half blue/half black eye.  She has short hair, floppy ears and a tail that curls.  Feisty little thing, she keeps my Pointer busy.

She's a hyper little thing, hard to get her to slow down long enough to take a picture...

Tough to talk about dogs these days. Mine was diagnosed with a heart tumor this week. [:(]

They give us so much love and it always hurts to lose them. My thoughts are with you.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/7/2011 1:13:37 PM)

While it hurts like hell to lose a pet, I am sure you gave yours a great life and will do what is right for it and let it go painlessly, I'm sure the dog had a very good life and that's all you can do, sorry to hear about it, but I'm sure the dog has it better with you than with some idiot who possibly wouldn't care and see it as a "thing".

Thanks, and thanks DesFIP. Yes, it is difficult, and deciding exactly the right time will be difficult too. The tumor will eventually cause cardiac arrest, but Calvin's immediate problem was the fluid from it surrounding the heart (and leaking into his stomach) which made his heart pumping more difficult. Since the fluid was drained he's been back to his happy playful self (granted only 4 days). He even played at bit in the ocean yesterday.

Its pretty easy to tell when a Golden is in pain...he doesnt eat! We'll see how long he lasts until the chest fills again and decide then whether to prolong things by draining it again, without subjecting him to repeated bouts of pain. The vet said that the final cardiac arrest will be instantaneous. At least we (my son in particular) have had some time to prepare for things.

Have you tried green oat tea for him? It's used a lot in herbal medication as it flushes the system out, the dog will pee a lot more, usually one gives it for infections of the urinal tract or for gout as it has strong cleansing properties (washes out the crystal build up that causes gout) and strengthens the immune system, I don't know if it would help for the problem of your dog but if it is a fluid build up, it might work really well. It would be at least worth checking it with your vet if you can give it a try, I lost 2 pet rats due to a rodent virus and the youngest one was suffering from it pretty badly too, very audible breathing with a rasp even after he had a course of antibiotics and the vet said not much more they can do, he'll always have and the fluid build up in the lungs is the reason for it and quite dangerous, I was desperate and started to put him on the tea (not like there was much to lose anyway) and within a couple of days the rasping that was there for weeks and months disappeared, the only problem is that I have to keep him on it, as it tends to come back when I stop mixing the tea with his water, but the tea is really not expensive and it seems to make a difference.
I heard from a couple of people that it's hard to find in the US, only some health food shops have it, in case you can't find it, shoot me a PM with an address and I send you a few packs, it's completely natural and doesn't interfere with meds, after our vet researched it (went back and told her about it) she actually now recommends it if dogs and cats were put on antibiotics and suffer from digestive problems due to it, it's just best to not give it straight with the antibiotics but about an hour later to avoid the antibiotics being cleaned out of the system as well.

IN RESPONSE TO THE EMAILS CONCERNING MY DOG Please be advised I am sick to death of receiving questions about my dog who mauled six illegals crossing the border, four Republicans wearing Palin 2012 tee shirts, two rappers, ten CM programmers, five phone operators who asked me to press #1 for English, nine teenagers with pants hanging past their cracks, eight customer service desk people speaking in broken English, and three Westboro "Church" members. FOR THE LAST TIME...MY DOG IS NOT FOR SALE

Makes me wonder if people trying to peddle religion have a certain smell that's offensive to dobies?

Maybe Im a dobie

Willbe, I'm a golden retriever lover myself. I've lost two to the fast growing tumors the breed is susceptible to. At least it was quick. Both times they went from well and happy to the end within a week.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/8/2011 9:51:42 PM)

my dog has decided that his favorite place in the world right now is leaning up against the toiletry cabinet in the bathroom, right in the doorway. not the most convenient when you're stumbling around in the dark.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/8/2011 10:07:10 PM)

oh wow -- i'm very sorry to hear about willbeurdaddy's puppydog... =(
many many good thoughts to you.

soul2share -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/9/2011 10:27:34 AM)

WBUD, I'm sorry to hear of your dog's distress.  When the time comes, I wish you the strength you'll need to make the decision and carry it out.  And allow yourself to grieve, it is a family member you've lost.  I cried for two weeks after losing my Shiloh.  Even my mom cried, and she was 1700 miles away when I told her what had happened.

{{{{{{hugs}}}}} to you from me and my furbabies.

I'm saddened to hear this. They bring so much joy to our lives and I know personally, I'd be fucked up inside if it were my dogs. I wish you and your pup the best.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/9/2011 10:43:06 AM)

Truly sorry to hear about your pup, wilbur. It hurts to your core when you lose one.

He's so HANDSOME, Wilbur!  I'm truly sorry about his health issues.  It's never easy to prepare for losing a member of the family.  You sound like a wonderful Daddy & he is very lucky to have you!

My girl's dog just passed his evaluation last night to be a "Companion Dog" at a local Hospice facility.  I'll be his "escort", so it'll be just the dog & me making our rounds.  I'm very excited to see how the residents accept him into their world!  Just having a furry little pet by your side can work wonders both mentally & physically![:D]

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (8/10/2011 8:52:20 AM)

I add my condolences to the pile, WBUD. It is always so difficult to lose a companion & best friend.

I'd like to congratulate Miss Potty's girl's dog on his achievement. A furry being is most helpful for healing. And I envy you that you get to make the rounds with him.

When I was in the psych ward for depression the first time, they allowed my girlfriend to bring Mr. Cat to me for a visit. I needed this visit for 2 reasons: I was always so lonely when I wasn't with him & he hated being away from me. At first they told me that I could only visit with him in the lobby, so I laid down on the floor with him. They decided that wasn't a great look, so we got to visit inside. Other clients came up to him & he was such a social cat that he let everyone pet him & coo over him. It was a wonderful day.
