Because horses listen to their fucking shit and don't get pissed off. And they have bigger dicks, I have pictures.

Just ask Catherine the Great...

I have none, but I would love to have one one day. I took riding lessons one summer when I was growing up. I would love to take riding lessons again... does it look silly for a 24 year old to be taking riding lessons?

Not at all.

I know several women who learned to ride after their kids left the nests. If they can do it in their mid 50s, you can at your age.

A quick list of some trainers in your state. I'm a quarter horse fan so I looked here but there will be many other barns in your area where you can take lessons. Ask around among friends who used to ride as to who they recommend.

I have two Tennessee Walker geldings...IMHO, the *best* breed. Anyone who thinks horses are dumb animals doesn't know horses. I blame my dad for this expensive lifelong addiction, because once you have the passion for horses, I don't think there's a way to rid yourself of it.

Quarter horses are nice, but Walkers really do have the best dispositions. They would have to, in order to put up with the torture inflicted on them to get them to walk the way the big lick (show horses) do. No horse walks that way naturally, without being in pain. It's one of the biggest shames of the horse world that this still goes on today.

Actually, i would like to retract my statement about Walkers being the best....not because i don't believe they are, but because each breed has something that makes them special, and so do cross breeds, and....well, all horses are awesome, damn it.

:-)

Joybaby, I find quarterhorses are best for therapeutic riding. They're very in tune with the kids and know how much a kid can do, and how much they need to do for the kid. When to push them and when not to.

you might be surprised to find the same qualities in a Walker. They tend to be excellent babysitters....they carry a child as if it's fine china, but can give a more experienced rider a bit of a challenge later in the same day. Sometimes Walkers have a bit of an edge when it comes to new or frightened riders just because of their extremely smooth gaits. The only horse i've ever trusted my daughter's life with (outside of a ring) is a Walker.

I lived on a horse farm for five years when I first got married. I loved everything about them.
They smelled wonderful and all had distinct personalities.

I had a horse when i was a kid on the farm. She was pretty smart. But one time she bit me and i bit her right back on her snout. She didnt bite me again after that. She almost kicked me in the head tho, missed but still..

I love the way horses perk up their ears and how they snort, all regal and all..

One of my favs are Appaloosas tho, I love their coloring, I always turn my head when i see one.. guess its sorta like guys checking out every blonde.. lol

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Why the hell do we never talk about horses? (8/16/2011 11:13:57 AM)

I have a couple of quarterhorses that I think are great.  I never had anything but bad luck with Appaloosas though.  I owned one for a time that thought it was his mission in life to try and kill me.

LaTigresse -> RE: Why the hell do we never talk about horses? (8/16/2011 11:23:04 AM)

I think that personality is less a breed specific trait but more, breeding/care and nutrition/handling/etc.

Iowa is, by in large, a quarter horse loving state. One of the silliest clowns of a horse I've ever known was a Quarter Horse. One of the meanest horses I've ever known was a Quarter Horse. One of the totally fucking crazy horses I've ever known was a Quarter Horse. The absolutely most stupid horses I've ever known where a Quarter Horse. The most mellow horse I've ever known was a Quarter Horse.......... and so on.

I've never wanted one. I don't care for the look of them, either the short, old ranch style of breeding or the newer, leggier, show version, or the racing version. Just something about the head that turns me off.

For me, if I don't like the head....eyes specifically, then I want nothing to do with owning the horse.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Why the hell do we never talk about horses? (8/16/2011 1:16:50 PM)

My other experience was my first horse, an Arab/Appaloosa mare.  Sweet girl, but for no particular reason, she got it in her head that she wasn't going to load in the trailer anymore.  It was pretty awful.  There is also a ride in the Pacific NW, the Chief Joseph ride, open only to Appaloosas.  The people I have talked to who have done it agree that Appaloosas are stubborn beast.  Smart, but stubborn.  I tend to agree.
My QH are technically appendix QHs, so they have a lot of Thoroughbred in them.  It seems so odd to be able to register mixed breeds, since I also am involved in purebred dog sports, but there you have it.

joybaby -> RE: Why the hell do we never talk about horses? (8/18/2011 4:27:55 AM)

i owned an Arabian stallion that was extremely well trained, especially in his ground manners. I bought him from a bitch who used him excusively as a teasing stud for her Walker mares, because he was so well behaved. He'd get the mares all worked up with gentle nuzzling, etc., and then she'd take him away and her (basically) untrained Walker stallion would, pretty much, race in and rape them. It was pretty horrific. But, if i were to base my breed preference solely on the experiences i had with that stupid woman, i'd love Arabians and think Walkers were stupid untrainable beasts.

I also worked briefly on an Arabian farm (Locust farms). They're, without question, beautiful horses. I just remember the trainer walking in one day while one of my co-workers was holding the ear of one of the horses-can't remember why...he wasn't twisting it or anything, but the trainer freaked out, yelling "these Arabians are crazy enough without you pulling on their ears!". I was pretty young so that sort of left the impression with me that Arabians were a bit nutty. The stallion i had helped to dispel that notion, though. You wouldn't even know he was a stallion unless you looked underneath. If we were out riding and someone else had a mare, occasionally he'd get a bit excited-remember he'd been teasing mares for years without any release, so you can't really blame him-but all you had to do was say, "put it away, Pre" and he usually would. Even if he did try to mount a mare, he'd only put one leg up and sort of wait..I guess because he was used to being stopped at that point. What a great horse he was. The lady I sold him to gelded him to use him for lessons, so as far as i know he never got lucky that one last time :-(
