I think they're just from stretchy fake leather, not vinyl but I imagine the smell in plastic shoes after you sweated a bit...

Ewwww, that makes it even worse! Honestly, I find that shoes tend to get in the way (or perhaps it's my size 10 hoofies, I don't know......) and I generally end up accidentally thwacking someone.
