Private sector jobs,
tweaka.

Unless you really believe that government could just hire everybody and solve unemployment that way.

Do you?

That is kind of how feudalism worked. Not that I suggest emulating that.

Notice yet, that not one leftist has dared touch that question?

They dance around it well enough

This dizzy leftist seems to be making the claim that government can solve the unemployment problem alone

I wonder where she thinks the money comes from

Even the WSJ has noted that many corporations are posting profits (some are record profits), and/or sitting on a load of cash, while laying off more people or not hiring anyone.  Some are using the cash to acquire other companies.

We could always start up a WPA program.  But wait, that didn't create any jobs.  'Twas a massive illusion.

tazzygirl -> RE: So What's In Your Satan's Sandwich Or Satan's Blue Plate Special? (8/6/2011 11:55:16 AM)

Where did anyone say government can solve it alone?

Could have sworn you said government created no jobs at all.

Many banks did fail.  Lehman Brothers went under.  AIG was supposedly next.  As I have said before, they SHOULD have been allowed to go under.  But the Lehman then AIG fiasco hit the markets and everyone got scared.  The ripple turned into a tidal wave.

Let me clarify then. The banks that received TARP money would not have failed. They totally botched the process....if Lehman was allowed to fail, all should have been left on their own. If others were bailed out Lehman should have been bailed out. The decisions were political, not economic. And of course AIG isnt a bank.

Why dont you continue the thought and talk about WHY they are sitting on cash.

Of all the political debates on this board, this one is the most intriguing...

In this case, I would have to say that both sides are correct.

1) Technically, government can create jobs (as we all know)
2) There are practical, financial, and even moral (IMO) limits to how many jobs government could or should create
3) Therefore, government alone cannot solve the unemployment issue. Mr. Carney, while technically incorrect, was correct in a larger sense.

THAT BEING SAID...

Caterpillar created roughly 15,000 jobs in 2010. (ALL of them overseas). (Citing government spending on infrastructure projects overseas, and the LACK of it here (except for some, stemming from the Stimulus package)).

An example of a government policy influencing the creation of jobs (There ya go, Mr. Carney).

Then, of course, there was Ronald Reagan, creating jobs via defense spending. Bush II created some jobs in via defense spending. (Of course the Neocons claimed that it was "tax cuts" for the rich that created those jobs)

My recipe for job creation:
1) Government spending on infrastructure (lots of it)
2) Extra Tax incentives for businesses large and small to hire. Of all places, I actually heard an excellent idea from former NYSE chairman, Dick Grasso, on (that dispenser of superior economic wisdom) Neil Cavuto's show. A twist on the old tax holiday for repatriated funds idea. Funds could be repatriated at a highly discounted tax rate, in RETURN for a commitment to hire.
3) Extend and increase tax cuts and credits from which ALL Americans can benefit. High income earners are NOT job creators (never have been). Our economy is driven by the middle class. If the middle class is prosperous, the economy is humming.

Lehman was a bank.  By itself, it created a ripple in the stock markets.  AIG is an insurance company

As Lehman Brothers (the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history at that time) suffered a catastrophic decline in share price, investors began comparing the types of securities held by AIG and Lehman, and found that AIG had valued its Alt-A and sub-prime mortgage-backed securities at 1.7 to 2 times the values used by Lehman which weakened investors' confidence in AIG.[29] On September 14, 2008, AIG announced it was considering selling its aircraft leasing division, International Lease Finance Corporation, to raise cash.[29] The Federal Reserve hired Morgan Stanley to determine if there are systemic risks to a financial failure of AIG, and asked private entities to supply short-term bridge loans to the company. In the meantime, New York regulators allowed AIG to borrow $20 billion from its subsidiaries.[33][34]

At the stock market's opening on September 16, 2008, AIG's stock dropped 60 percent.[35] The Federal Reserve continued to meet that day with major Wall Street investment firms, hoping to broker a deal for a non-governmental $75 billion line of credit to the company.[36] Rating agencies Moody's and Standard and Poor downgraded AIG's credit ratings on concerns over likely continuing losses on mortgage-backed securities. The credit rating downgrade forced the company to deliver collateral of over $10 billion to certain creditors and CDS counter-parties.[37]
The New York Times later reported that talks on Wall Street had broken down and AIG may file for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, September 17.[38] Just before the bailout by the US Federal Reserve, AIG former CEO Maurice (Hank) Greenberg sent an impassioned letter to AIG CEO Robert B. Willumstad offering his assistance in any way possible, ccing the Board of Directors. His offer was rebuffed.[39]

Lehmans bankruptcy affected AIG heavily... the tidal effect.

My blue plate special would kind of be a blue light special with the U.S. Marshalls going into the white house and arresting Obama for high crimes and misdemeanors.

My blue plate special would be people like popeye being drawn and quartered for sponging off the U.S. taxpayers.
