Had this OP walked in with Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the receptionist mentioned that to the person doing data entry, nobody would bat an eye.  The only difference is that she got offended.

I think "Welfare mom" is a bit different than mentioning the insurance, I'm still saying that if I would notice something like that happening with another patient, I would make a big stink and cancel my appointment ASAP and complain, in the complain I would mention that I was so disturbed by this that I do not feel I can trust them with my information. It does not matter if it is her financial or medical information, it was grossly unprofessional and a doctor who doesn't have his staff trained well enough to behave discretely, I don't want to risk what else he might not care enough for.

Lockit -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 12:18:39 PM)

I don't know all the details, but...

It is unlawful to discriminate against someone that receives medicaid and they should get the same treatment as other patients. If other patients are subjected to insulting comments because of their insurance coverage, their lifestyle, marital status, race, income level, disability or anything else, then I would assume it would be okay to insult them. However... I am not sure this would be allowed.

I would consider speaking to an ombudsman. You should be able to google or talk to your local social services office to find yours. A complaint at the doctors office wouldn't be as effective.

Edit to add: An ombudsman might not be able to help, but would know the laws. There is also the Patient's bill of rights. Check them out. Most doctor's offices have a pamphlet and many give them to new patients.

actually none of us know all the details. we weren't there.

it's possible the receptionist was as rude as the OP claims.

it's also just as possible that the OP is misquoting and blowing things out of proportion.
she seems to have a lot of complaints about the "cunt bug faced troll receptionist," the "clueless neuro doc who is dragging his feet" and who her old man told to "take his crappy care and shove." BY THE SAME TOKEN, she says her NARCOTIC meds "fuddle her head so badly."

so all of you who are rushing to judgement and encouraging her to pitch a fit and have the receptionist fired?
kinda sucky, if you ask me, based on her own words.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 3:25:52 PM)

I'm not surprised that she has complains about the doctor, as I said, if he does his job as he runs the office, I'm not surprised that she's not happy.

Btw nobody here is rushing to judgement and encourage her to have the receptionist fired, if she was called a "Welfare mom" she has every reason to complain and we are encouraging her to do that, if there's nothing to it, the person won't even be reprimanded, if there is, she'll get a well deserved warning. It's not quite pitchforks at dawn as you like to indicate.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that a delicate - self picked - name like "pissdoll" finds the OPs language out of order?

We were commenting on what the OP said and if she was indeed treated in the way she described, she has every reason to file a complain and she'll be doing everybody else in the same situation a fave. If a receptionist would say anything about me, especially something degrading, I'd do more than pitch a fit and if she'd be working for me and she would have had complains like that before, she would not be dealing with customers but do data entry in a room far far away from any contact with customers.

did i say i found her language out of order? nope.

do i think the situation occurred exactly the way she presented it? nope.

Termyn8or -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 3:46:00 PM)

"Are You always so angry at the government?? "

I am not angry with the government at all. I would like to kill every MF in it, but no, I am not angry. There is a difference. They are detrimental to the human race, so of course I want to kill them, like a cockroach or a rat. Something like that.

I have never had roaches, but I know people who did of course. (my environment is too harsh for roaches) But a secret to not having bugs is to have spiders. I will NEVER kill a spider, they eat bugs. I have lived here twenty years at least and have seen two cockroaches in the whole time. And I am a fucking slob. All your chemicals and shit ain't shit, I got spiders. We have made friends almost. They eat those fleas and tics all the time, and the other bugs when they are little. They do not reproduce when they are dead.

A spider eats those bugs by sucking out their innards leaving the outside intact. I wish we had some spiders to let loose on the parasites in the government. But being a relatively well read, self educated Man I realize why there are no spiders to suck the substance out of "our" elected officals.

It's because there is nothing to suck out.

You found the language worthy to repeat and single out, so that makes me assume you found it out of order....

As everybody said, if the receptionist commented as she said "Another welfare mom" then she has a valid reason to complain, if it didn't occur like she said, the complain won't be going anywhere. But what would be her motif for making up being called a welfare mom? She seems to be genuinely upset about it, which is understandable, she goes to a doctor to get treatment and not to be put down for her financial situation by a receptionist and if the receptionist behaved like that, a reprimand is well in order. As I said, if I would notice such behaviour it would be reason enough to change doctors, even if it wouldn't involve me, it would just make all sorts of warning bells go off.

i didn't find it out of order, however it did give me the impression that her gut level reaction is one of histrionics.
that, with her comment that she's on heavy narcotics and has an attorney on her speed dial make me conclude that she's likely unreasonable in general and looking for a fight (or a payout).

again, i think the first thing i typed regarding this is maybe it all happened exactly as she stated it did.

but i add all these components up, and i'm left feeling sorry for the poor receptionist, who quite possibly notified the billing girl that she had another patient on govt medical she needed to verify/bill for/ etc and is now being reprimanded.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 4:58:47 PM)

I don't think she'll be reprimanded if she did exactly that, it will be a perfectly valid reason, if she said welfare mom, not a valid reason, now come on, the US has come a bit from the times when they owed slaves and didn't listen to anything that was said, the receptionist will be asked what happened and if she said she was verifying the insurance, I doubt she will be reprimanded, if she called her a welfare mom, there is no way to justify it.

I didn't see the attorney on speed dial comment, but yeah, that would give me a pause too, I mean if I can't pay my bills or a health insurance, I certainly wouldn't waste money on an attorney - unless it is related to the accident she had. Seriously, if you are working despite the fact that in a few years you might end up in a wheel chair, you're putting in an effort and if somebody thinks they can put you down for that, little sympathy. On the other hand, this is online, so who knows. I seriously don't think anybody would make up such an insult because it did seem to have hurt her...

pissdoll -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 5:12:10 PM)

i don't think she made it up.
i think her perception of what was being said may have been altered by her medications.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 5:16:25 PM)

If she reports it, they will ask her about it, and ask her exactly what was said and in which circumstances, so in case it was just her perception (though she did use the term "Another welfare mom" - which if it was said like that is out of order) it will come out and the complain won't be going anywhere.

I am here to tell you that MANY COMPANIES DO NOT HAVE AN INSURANCE PLAN. It would be nice if they did, and that folks could afford it, but sometimes there just isn't any.

I have always had to pay for my own health care coverage. I won't say the numbers, they frighten even me.

THIS.  Even many federal government employees who work full time are not eligible for health insurance.  Cost cutting measures, thank god for the health care bill eh?

EgillAssa -> RE: Marked for failure? (8/5/2011 7:32:07 PM)

Actually the woman did say exactly what shorty stated. She may be on narcs but she is not so bored or lacking in attention that she needs to run to you all and stir up shit. I don't think think she should have been fired. Shorty doesn't either. We both think more than a verbal warning was needed.

She does msunderstand things easily and takes written "official" government (such as the DHS brochure) literal over people sometimes. Her worker and I sat down with her today.

Now the company she works for does offer health insurance to those WITHOUT pre-existing major medical conditions. They also have a drug discount program, but with state assitance her medication totaling almost a grand are $23 a month.

Now I will keep her from starting anymore personal posts and keep it strictly light and humorous.

Pissdoll is one of the best posters I've ever read on this Message Board. Her take on the Rodney King thread was excellent. I can never get enough of what she has to say.

~ Fast Reply ~

I work in IT with medical records and can tell you, HIPAA (not HIPPA) is extremely stringent.  As windchymes said, any personal information given to people who do not have a need to know can be considered a HIPAA violation.  Addresses, names of spouses, etc.  That said, if it was said to another employee in registration/scheduling, it could be argued whether or not it was an actual violation.  Then again, had she said "Did you know her husband George just got laid off?" - Yep, that's a violation.

Going by what was relayed, the receptionist was rude.  Verbal employee warnings are typically still documented and placed in an employee's file.  Even in California, at-will employees who actually ARE fired at-will, sue and get lots of money by settling out of court.  Employers are typically extremely careful when wanting to terminate an employee.  It's often a very long process.

Regarding Shorty being offended - Several years ago I was off work on disability for about 6 months, and I hated it.  It was hard for me to NOT feel like I was gauging the system somehow, and taking a handout I shouldn't have been taking.  But the truth was, I really couldn't work.  I had to get over myself and my self deprecating feelings, and understand that I couldn't work, I couldn't get by without an income, and I needed it.  My doctor had to reason with me as to why I needed to get over myself about it.  So, feeling that way to begin with, if someone had, at the time, made a comment like that, I would have felt even crappier.  Not everyone who needs help is taking advantage of the system and a lazy, selfish sloth.  But there's still a stigma about receiving assistance, and being the recipient of that stigma is no fun when you're truly in need. You feel like you have to prove to everyone that you really do need it, which just adds more stress to a stressful situation.  I used to be one of those "I've NEVER needed to take help" people....until I did need to.

Neuvy, you got a point there. The bitch said that in public, and technically that is giving personal info to the public at large.

I have been told that I would have made a great lawyer. Didn't know quite how to take it. I would attack it on that grounds, and don't fucking try to kid me, when you walk in that door you are recorded on tape, HD or DVD, something.

Hugs, to both of you.

It's funny, in college i had a similar experience with a dentist. I made the appointment, and stated at the time that i would be using a coupon from the college newspaper. When i went in, they told me that it was an old coupon and they wouldn't honor it. (The coupon did not have an expiration date, but it had been clipped from the school newspaper a few weeks earlier.) i said i still wanted to keep the appointment, even without the coupon. (i hadn't been to the dentist in several years, and i wanted to get it over with.)

The receptionist started arguing with me, saying that i was wasting money to do it without the coupon. (But i had a coupon!) She convinced me to reschedule the appointment until i could get a new version of the coupon, but when i agreed to reschedule, she proceeded to criticise me for not keeping my appointment (but i had been willing to keep the appointment!)

i knew i would be unlikely for me to come back if i waited, so i told her i would just keep the appointment that day, without the coupon. The dentist heard me, and then she came over and started lecturing me through the reservation window about how i was obviously paying with my parents money because otherwise i wouldn't be so irresponsible it. (It was a posh college town, and the assumption was that everyone who went to school there must be rich.) Actually, it was my own money, and i was living in my car at the time.

i left without raising a fuss. i told them i would make a new appointment, knowing full well that i would NOT. i figured fighting about it was petty and not worth the effort. Although i've sometimes wondered if it would've been better off in the long run if i did.

i think you did the right thing by not letting it go. i don't think the OPs comments in this thread were out of line. i wish you both well.

It is, actually...at least where i worked.

A "verbal" warning is written by the supervisor, discussed with the employee and placed into the employees personal file. The next occurrence would be a "written" warning that is no different from the verbal warning, except it requires the employees signature.

Oh I dunno, Termy, I'm the type where, if no harm was done other than me feeling angry, hurt or embarrassed, I prefer to just get over it and move on to better things.  It's a "pick your battles" kinda thing with me.  Now if someone KNEW me and heard, and I didn't want them to know...I'd have pushed it further.
