quote:

OK a friend and i been chatting about me wanting to get my nipple pierced and He wants to do it Himself.

One should NEVER have a piercing performed by anyone other than one who is WELL experienced. i'd suggest getting references prior to having work performed.

quote:

But why do I mention Texas? Because “Texas is the only state that licenses all tattooing establishments and carries out regular inspections to ensure proper sterilization and aseptic techniques required to prevent the transmission of viral hepatitis.”

Simply search by keywords "tattoo licensing" and there you'll find a TON of information regarding licensing requirements across the states:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22tattoo+licensing%22&btnG=Google+Search

OR a search including the keyword "Massachusetts" turns up that The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Health Quality Management Regulations set forth a model code for the practice of body art and for the maintenance and operation of body art on January 23, 2001 ! :
http://www.mass.gov/dph/bhqm/ba1-20.pdf

State regulation is already in place for many. State wide licensing requirements should be as well and are likely to be federally mandated and state regulated in the near future.Regulations, registration, inspection, and sterile/sanitary requirements for tattoo artists (any tattoo salons also provide piercings), body modification/piercing artists & cosmetologists. Licensed cosmetologists are legally able perform piercings & in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, & Florida to name three that i know of personally. ALL salons (tattoo establishments as well) are subject to state inspection. Many states have web sites which list any who hold licenses to run salons in their state. These web sites allow a simple search by name to check the status of a person's license, and/or report unsatisfactory works performed.

my main choice of work is with hair. As a board certified licensed cosmetologist of the state of MA, i am experienced and legally able to perform piercings. i do not provide piercings currently (i have in the past) as the salon i work for currently does not provide the service.

Many cosmetologists further their knowledge and areas of expertiese by attending classes regularly once licensed, which further their education & training. ALL states mandate that all cosmetologists MUST renew their licensure. MANY states MANDATE that cosmetologists MUST attend seminars and classes anually or bi-anually in order to renew their licenses. The Massachusetts Division of Registration, Regulation and Licensure for the board of Cosmetology performs unannounced inspections of salons regularly. i would expect and hope that once piercing & tattooing artists are required to be licensed across the states, the regulatory procedures & standards of inspections will closely mimic those already in place for cosmetologists.

Piercing falls under the regulations of "body modifications, body art, & skin penetration". Those keywords as well as the words "regulations, licensure, & registration + YOUR STATE" should in most cases lead you to the appropriate information regarding piercings provided by your particular state's division of registration & licensure.

A simple search of google will provide current information regarding licensure & registration, inspection, and sanitary requirements for all states, as mandated by the FDA:

my 2¢ , simply put: DO NOT try this at home. Piercings should be performed by experienced individuals.

I can't imagine doing it at home..... I strongly urge you do seek a professional, since you must live with the results good bad or so so. I went to a pro and the results were really great. I loved the adrenelin that came with the needle. And I love my piercings!!!! All I need now is new jewelry

You should never attempt this at home, but I know a fellow that makes house calls, here's his photo:

One has to keep in mind, not only the activity of the piercing ... but the duration it takes to heal. An average thickness nipple can take easily 30 - 45 days to heal ... and much longer if it has frequent irritation or a low grade infection at any time during the healing process. AND it'll take often several more months for the healed piercing to toughen up so it doesn't break down easily. A nipple piercing (or a piercing on any other thick body part) is a committment ... think of it as a puppy that you have to feed and water and clean up after :-) Just getting the piercing is the easy part ... the aftercare is the work.

Lots seem to think in the previous posts that skin can be sterilized. Got news for ya ... use all the betadine you want ... but you'll never get skin sterile. The best you can do is disinfect it. The difference to most of you is negligible, but there is a big difference. And betadine by itself is not nearly as effective as multiple disinfectants used with optimum contact time and then followed by another disinfectant (i.e. hibiclens, betadine, EtOH, H2O2, etc). Not necessarily all of those or in that order ... just a list of a few.

Also ... you might think that piercing jewelry in a sterile plastic bag is sterile ... but there are big odds that it isn't. Without using double sterile bags and w/o a sterility indicator inside the bags, you really don't know. And even IF all of that is met ... if the bags have been roughly handled or nicked ... all bets are off.

If you've gotta pierce something, start w/ labia minorae ... they'll heal in under a week. Leave the thicker piercings for professionals.

Also ... IF a nipple piercing happens to nick a lactiferous duct, you can start leaking milk out of the side of the piercing ... AND that can result in a portal of infection into the breast. Can you spell abscess and filet? The surgical fix is never fun ... and sometimes nightmarish.

How much are your nipples worth to you?

Thought so. Get a professional to do it!
