But we live with it every day of our lives and that is a hell of a price to pay especially if some coward congress man or woman sends us off to fight a war but refuses to fund it or allows us to win it.

Good to know. So you could stand there and watch an intruder raping your woman and not pul the trigger? Because you would have sad feelings and guilt afterwards? Wow. I wish all men were as upfront as you so I would know who not to date. Just a little info, women like it when their men will protect them, and that includes being able to intervene and kill someone that is going to hurt or rape us in our own fucking homes. Some people don't deserve remorse for exterminating, it's that simple.

Getting beaten and raped is a high price to have to pay for some slob thinking only about himself and how he'll feel afterward if he interferes.

Really glad I am never going to meet you Aynne.
Do you really not make any distinction between a killer/rapist and someone sneaking in to steal your i pod and kick your dog?
You would really kill someone to protect a laptop or a phone?

Personally, I don't have kids so keeping guns out of reach of them is no problem.

Having been shot by kids whose parents didn't own a gun, I would tend to disagree. Carry as much as you like, but don't leave ready for use anything that invites long-range accidents when you're not around. See, it's not the punk kids that got an early introduction to what is behind those statistics after they broke in and grabbed an unsecured rifle. It's me, for telling them not to keep playing with it.

"Teehee. Boom. Fuck, this thing was loaded?!?"

Priceless, just priceless.

Health,
al-Aswad.

geeze,. you see someone playing with a rifle and you try to deal with it yourself instead of calling the police that know how to deal with situations like that? of course it being friggin loaded was a possibility.. anyone playing around with a rifle, you think they got any brains?

If someone has broken into your house and confronted you, you don't really know whether they are there to steal your phone, kick your dog, or cut your throat. What are you supposed to do, ask them?
And yes, I would shoot their ass if anyone tried to injure one of my animals. And I wouldn't feel one second of remorse.

I wouldn't care about the i pod, but I might kill someone who kicked my dog.

Ok, no I wouldn't, and I'm not a big bad ass either, so kicking his/her ass would probably be out of the question to - but I'd give them the best of a redheads temper!

Anyway, I don't carry.  I wouldn't ever feel safe with a handgun in the house.  To be honest, handguns scare the bejeebus out of me.  I am not an anti-gun enthusiast, and I'm seriously considering getting a couple shotguns and maybe a rifle, but not really for home protection.  I just figure if the economy gets much worse, I'm going to have to start hunting again to bring food home to my family, and I'd rather do it with a shotgun than a stick.

For home protection, I have a dog and a puppy (who is more vicious than the dog), four sons (at least one of whom is home at any given time), several nosey neighbors and 6 young men in their twenties half a block away that can be here in 10 seconds if I call.  I know this from previous spider and bat fiascoes.  I'd have to move into the armory, to feel safer.

so i was wondering- of those people on here who are NOT anti-gun, what kind/kinds of guns do you have, and what do you think are the pros and cons of those particular ones? If that question shouldn't be posted here, or if there is a different place to post it so as not to piss everyone off, forgive me....that is not what i'm trying to do, i'm seriously interested in the answers.

I do. But, I am required to because of my job. On duty or off; I am required at all times to carry a weapon on my person. BUT, even if it was not required, I would. I grew up with guns, and have always carried one both on my person and in my vehicle. My kids are the same way.

Quickly skimming through this thread, I was struck by the level of fear underlying people's posts...

So my question is why do Americans feel so frightened?

My question would be, why do you interpret what you read as reflecting "fear"? Why not realistic precaution, born of common sense? It has been proven over and over again to be foolish to imagine that "it won't happen to me."

Semper Paratus - Official motto of the United States Coast Guard
"Be Prepared" - The Scout Motto

"Frightened" is what you feel, and all too often the last thing you'll ever feel, when you're unprepared.

K.

Sorry K - when people are talking about sleeping with a gun under the pillow, about carrying a gun at all times "just in case ....", when adages such as "the police are minutes away when seconds count" are being bandied about, there must be fear operating at some level or other. This is not any comment on the gun debate in the US.

I don't ever think like that at all - the idea of needing a gun to protect myself from anything is just so foreign to my life. Even though levels of gun ownership here come close to the US, I've never encountered this type of thinking here at all. So this entire approach is alien to me and difficult for me to understand.

"Being prepared" you say - well 'being prepared' for what exactly? 'Being prepared' for something nasty/criminal of course. If fear (of crime etc) isn't an operative factor, what is it that people are so intent upon 'being prepared' for, or protecting themselves against?

I do when I am up north, either in Canada or Alaska but normally use a lever action carbine, with the sort of animals I might need to use a weapon on even the most powerful handguns are marginal. Sometimes I take my .22  pistol, for small game and pest shooting, as rifle ammunition is both expensive and overkill..

I have one of the "Canada pistols" which the family has owned since the 1920's and even carried it occupationally years ago, but the revolver likely belongs in a museum nowadays. If I had to use or carry a only a pistol to fight people, it is good for that purpose.

I would move if the area I lived in got to the point I would have carry firearms as protection against other people in order to live in it, and the people living there refused to address the problem.

My brother drew my attention to the Police song "Murder is Easy" back around 78 or so. Recently I asked him how many kills he had in Viet Nam and he said 12 that he was directly responsible for (meaning he has no idea of the body counts in the firefights he was in). And he reminded me of that song, and he said that it gets easier each time, until it's just like "sayin' your ABCs."

I wouldn't know, myself. I guess ya do what ya gotta do, and worry about your Karma later.

Anyways, I don't need to carry. I'm already packin'.

There won't be much left of a duck after it gets shot with a 5.56. Maybe the dogs would collect and eat the bloodshot pieces.

There "must" be, eh? And why is that, precisely? When I get in my car and fasten my seat-belts, it isn't because I "fear" I'm going to have an accident. If I had the slightest reason to fear that I might have an accident -- because I didn't feel well, for example, or because I knew there was a problem with the brakes -- I wouldn't drive, with or without seat-belts. Just like I wouldn't go into certain neighborhoods at 3am, with or without a gun.

If you would take what people say at face value, instead of twisting it into some weird caricature, you would realize that you've never encountered that type of thinking here either. You didn't see anyone in this thread say they "needed" a gun. You made that up. They said in case the need should arise, which is quite a different matter.

And so what if you don't think like that? Why is it necessarily the case that anyone who doesn't think like you do "must" be operating out of "fear"? Maybe they're just smart enough to recognize the fact that they're not covered in protective fairy dust.

Chance, tinkerbelle. Chance. It may be a concept unfamiliar to you, but us humans have to deal with it.

K.
