The charismatic leader of the New Democrats passed away today after a fierce battle with cancer. He was 61.

In the last federal election in Canada, last spring, the NDP won enough seats to become the official opposition. Sometimes it pays to pay attention to politics other than your own.

Im hugely sad today, he pissed off a lot of people when I first remember him. he had a very different style when he started out but I dunno he seemed to have lost his way somewhere, and I lost a lot of respect for him, but still as a politician he was one I did like personally. He was looking so very very unwell lately. My thoughts are with his family

RIP Jack

He was definitely charismatic! His politics were a tad too left for me but that didn't stop me from really liking the guy. He definitely had an amazing personality and impact on Canadians.

I was sorry to find out that he had lost his battle. I was surprised to see how gaunt he looked in photos from the last time he was in public. My heart is with his family and friends and for all of those who have lost someone they loved to cancer.

Although I am not a fan of the NDP's politics, I very much respected Mr. Layton for his personal and warm service to his constituents. I use to live in his riding and found him to a great leader and a very intelligent man. I will miss his presence in the political landscape.

Canada needs someone to counter that simpering monarch worshiper, and corporate and United Empire Loyalist toady Harper.

And for better or worse, Layton was the real  leader of the opposition, the Liberals were drifting rudderless, and Bloc Quebec is going off a cliff. It is hard to see his replacement.

He will be missed.

I am very much afraid that all his efforts to become the official opposition will be for naught. The NDP are where they are today because of Smilin' Jack .... without him they are rudderless. They may refill the position - but they will never replace the man.

Prime Minister Harper has granted Jack a state funeral, to be help in Toronto on Saturday.

An impromptu memorial get together in NP Square this afternoon for Jack Layton, with pictures of hundreds of messages written in chalk, and a bagpipe player. He is definitely going to be missed

I very much fear that what happened to the Liberals without Pierre Trudeau will happen now with the death of Jack Layton. RIP Jack, you will be missed.

In death, he lives on.
"Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. . .
My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."
Let's not disappoint him: the barbarians are not only passed the gates, they hold the power of veto: stop Harper now!

If his death can reignite some of the passion in the populace, then he will have done his job and then some.
Its up to those left behind
