I was in NJ today taking clients out to lunch. We all felt the restaurant shake and no one believed it was an earthquake. Then I got a text from a good friend in Richmond, who verified it.

Scary.

Ok, this is Fox News but the article says there was damage to the National Cathedral in that 3 pinnacles fell off the main tower and the main tower seems to be leaning. Ahem....the Washington Monument 'may' be tilting...eep!
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/08/23/magnitude-58-earthquake-hits-virginia-sends-shockwaves-throughout-east-coast/%27%20rel=%27nofollow

Other articles have said there are cracks in walls of the Smithsonian Castle and some windows shattered.

Yep. There aren't faults and fractures in the earth's crust in this area, it's a solid bedrock. So the waves travel better and apparently don't lose as much in the process.

Felt it here in GA too. Saw on the news that the reason it was felt up and down the East coast unlike the West coast is because our "rocks" are different.

Howdy folks
well this got me some overtime! :-)  I had been in some quakes in California, so as soon as I felt the motion,  knew right away.

I'm in Baltimore as well, and I was immediately notified by emergency mgmt despite what the media was screaming about, it was a 5.8 Epicenter, 6 km subsurface proximal to Richmond.  The damage here in Balto was minimal--DC had a bit more--early reports listed a burst water pipe at the pentagon, some structural damage at national cathedral, and cracks in the capital building.   Locally--good god you'd think it was the fucking rapture.   People were running around screaming that buildings collapsed downtown when in fact, we didn't even have any broken glass.  A few drop ceiling panels fell, and shit, that happens when we DON'T have an earthquake.

I had to rush back to the office (I was in the field) to reassure the staff, and keep them from going outside.  They were FAR safer inside the building than outside where the hazards to them were much greater.  I sent someone else to the EOC--I wanted to have some visibility in the bldg so that they would feel safe.

Sorry to those of you who had some broken items--they may be claimable on your insurance.

Probably because scientists consider the Atlantic coast possibilities for a tsunami very slim.

My friends in Toronto felt it, and there was a government building evacuated here, (four hours outside of Toronto) because of aftershocks, which I wasn't aware of.

Many people on the east coast have never experienced an erthquake.

Nice to see you making fun of them.

I lack your recent streak of restraint.

I suppose I should care and try to do better.  But, I tried to find the shrugging smiley... and I gave up because I could care less.

Im also curious as to why others feel they have the right to ask demanding questions, or why they have the expectation of getting an answer.

Something Im really going to have to work on.

While I know that, just how many people have the geology education to know that?

Most people know that earthquakes can cause tsunamis and that is about it. Combine that with what happened in Japan not so long ago and I can see the concern people would have. I can see one or more of the agencies receiving a lot of worried phone calls and sending that release out to news stations for dissemination.

Putting it on their ticker seems a reasonable thing to do.

I just do not understand the feelings of "Christ on a crutch, can you believe what those idiots put on their ticker?"

Frankly I do not understand swearing to a sports guy either.

Reasonable to you, perhaps.  Most who live along the coast know this as basic knowledge.  And with the hurricane approaching, most TV's are turned to the weather channel.  Gotta keep an eye on the sky.
