Has anyone mentioned lavender?  A few drops in the bath or on your pillow can also help insomnia. Put some fresh or dried lavender in your room.  A glass of warm milk is also meant to be great. Maybe do some meditating before going to bed to clear your mind.  Keep set routines, make bedtime a ritual eg brush your teeth, tv or computer off, warm bath or shower, warm milk, when feeling relaxed and hopefully a little sleepy, go to bed.

from yet another that accepts that insomnia is a part of my life...smiles

A regular sleep shedule... or at least a regular get up schedule.  Meaning if you go to bed late, don't sleep in.

Reading helps me.  Tv helps others, but keeps me up.  I read some sci-fi every night.

Make the sleeping room really dark.  Elminate other noises.

A vigirous workout schedule.  Don't work out before bed, give yourself a couple hours, but excercise is important.

I have slept 2-3 hours a night for years, if not decades.  Try taking a warm bath, eating something like a turkey sandwich and warm milk a few hours before going to bed.

Don't drink caffeine hours before going to bed, don't eat chocolate either.

Of course, I migh not be the one to listen too LOL

The doctor has had me on a dozen sleeping pills at different times, I take the pill, go to bed and still wake up in 2-3 hours, just way more tired and drowsy than without taking them.

I've suffered with insomnia for as long as I can remember, I am never on a "normal" sleep schedule longer than 2 weeks, regardless of what I've tried.

What ::helps:: me now is using melatonin supplements.  They work in the same way as a sleeping pill, you take them, they make you drowsy, BUT they don't carry the ill side effects of prescription or over the counter sleeping pills.  Melatonin tablets are sold in all health food stores, and a brand called Vivitas is sold in pharamcies and grocery stores as well, so you can really find it anywhere.  They may sell other brands as well, but I've only seen the Vivitas bottles so far.

They may or may not work for you, but they're worth a shot.  They don't give that 'pill hangover' effect in the morning, which was the biggest plus in my mind.  There also was none of that 'excitability' (where you toss and turn and every sound or sensation irritates the shit out of you lol) like there always had been with sleeping pills like there always had been with sleeping pills.

At the health shop I buy mine at, they're $12 for 120 tablets and I believe they're sold with a universal 3mg dose per tablet.  Hope that helps, insomnia is brutal

Sorry, forgot to add, they're not magical, they ::help:: me get to sleep at a more reasonable time, but they haven't "cured" me.  When I run out of them, I'm still on my old bodyclock schedule and won't sleep for 40 hours   So if you do try them, don't expect miracles, they just provide some relief and a more comfortable way to deal with the insomnia.

Try working 3rd shift!  Ug!  i went from tylenol pm - to restoril and then to Ambien - all cuz my stress level had increased.

Now that my stress is back down to manageable - i occasionally take benedryl instead.  Benedryl has the same med that Tylenol PM has - only no pain reliever.

Free advice: worth at least as much as you pay for it: Here is mine:
It is important to know the type of insomnia and to rule out medical causes, such as sleep apnea, thyroid and neurological disturbances/imbalances (etc). Nearly every major city has sleep centers which specialize in the study, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.
The more you know about the causes (or likely causes) of sleeplessness for you, the more sense you can make of the many interventions available
A detailed medical history including lifestyle habits (details of diet, exercise, bedtime – not necessarily bondage or BDSM details) are sometimes enough for a sleep specialist to tailor interventions specific to your details and needs. Despite the best intentions of well wishing posters (myself included) trying random suggestions culled from what works for others and does you no harm is not often useful. (Many sleep centers or clinics have low fee programs and often insurance coverage is useful in payment for diagnostic tests. ) Best wishes and the blessings of a good sleep when you want to sleep.
