modestmouse -> breast lump concerns (9/12/2011 10:02:15 PM)

I've recently discovered a small lump in my right breast and I'm a little concerned so I have a few questions for others who may have experienced a lump scare.

Before I start I already do plan on making an appointment very soon but until I am able to be seen I wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this and their experiences with such.

It's about the size of a pea, isn't raised above the skin but I can feel it when I press down on it, it stays in place, doesn't move around and there's not really any pain associated with it except when I press down on it and even then it's just a dull, quick tenderness. I haven't had any kind of breast play in months so I can't see that as being the problem.

So those of you have discovered something like this, did it turn out to be something more than a cyst or a benign tumor? I'm thinking and hoping it's just a blocked duct. I have no history at all of breast cancer in my family but I've never felt something like this before in my breast so it's just a little disconcerting.

Anyone have any kind of advice to put my mind a little more at ease until I see a doctor?

I had a mammogram a few years ago where I had to have a call back.  When they repeated the mammogram, they decided it was just a cyst.  However, I insisted they do a biopsy anyway, which was quick and easy.  The results were that it was a cyst.  Still, I knew for sure rather than always having some uncertainly in the back of my mind.

Having said that, go to the doctor now.  Making an appointment very soon means you haven't made an appointment yet.  Do it.  And, even if the doctor concludes it is nothing, make sure every last test is done to insure it is, in fact, nothing.  Doctors have been known to skimp on tests since insurance companies hate them and sometimes fight paying for them.  That means you have to be assertive about your health care at a time when you are feeling a little vulnerable and afraid, but your peace of mind is the most important thing.

Thanks Iamsemisweet. I will be making an appointment this week. I've just been waiting to see if it went away on its own or changed in any way but it's been about two weeks now with no change so I'll be calling this week.

I'm going to play it by ear once I go to the doctor and see what they recommend and/or what the outcome of a mammogram will be before I decide if I should get a biopsy. I also have to check with my insurance and see what they will pay for. I'm pretty sure they'll pay for the mammogram but not sure about a biopsy unless it's recommended by the doctor. I'll be looking into that today.

Thank you for the advice.

If the cost of the test is what is delaying your checkup, October is National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, and because of that, there are alot of facillities that will be offering mammograms
for free or reduced cost.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor (Go Mom!) and getting screened every year is high priority.
While I have never experienced an actual lump in my breasts, I get an occassional ache, or
sometimes a throbbing pulse and I swear right then and there I have cancer! It's very scary.
I just had my annual check up yesterday, and sometimes the hardest thing is waiting for the results.

Glad to here you're getting on about making that appointment. Always best to take action early, just in case.

On the positive side, it could be any number of things... cyst, blocked duct, dense tissue, annoyed gland (depending on location), calcium deposit (my mother has these, weirdly), benign tumor...

But yes, it's always best to err on the side of caution!

Please do not wait; make that appointment.

It's highly likely that your doctor will have no problem ordering a biopsy for a breast lump, since doctors like to stay as lawsuit-free as possible :) And most insurance companies are focused on diagnostic and preventative care and testing because it costs them less money than treatments. At this initial stage, you should have no problems in those respects.

Don't put off testing, the odds are greatly in your favor for having something benign. But just in case.....[:)]

Yes, I've dealt with three separate lumps in the breast.  The first two were cysts, confirmed by a mammogram and ultrasound.  The third was a benign tumor, viewed by mammogram, ultrasound, and stereo-tactical (needle) biopsy.  The third doubled in size within 6 months, however, and was promptly removed by a lumpectomy, and confirmed to still be benign, fortunately.  It felt as you described....hard, not mobile, and not much in the way of pain.

The lumpectomy was painful, took about 6 months to heal, but 3 years later I have no scar (they cut along the aureola) and my breast tissue filled in the indent that had been previously resulted from the surgery.

Because of a family history of breast cancer, I am to be checked every 6 months now.

It's good you're getting checked out.  If it's nothing (and odds are that's the case), then you can be free of any "what-if" concern you might have.  If it's something, you can start doing something about it asap.

Best wishes to you.  I know it can be scary.

My story is different!  I had trouble laying on my left breast it was not comfortable at all!
I was to go to have my checkup but problems at work made me delay it until much later1
I had a nurse call my job screaming at me to get checked, I was so uspet with her, how dare 'she call my'
place of work!!  I called and report her, but she saved my life, I went for my test so fast , but I could
not feel mine they had to find it with a test, I had breast cancer!  If she had not called me I would not be here!
Do not be frighten go as fast as you can, have all of the checkup and test to make sure it is not cancer!
Do not let many say "oh it is nothing or it feel like just a cyst , this is your life take charge and make sure they
listen to "you"!  I had a lumpdetogy <<<( I misspell that word) it was 11 years ago!  I am so happy to be here
I still have my breast but that did not matter at all, I am a survior and so proud!  With my telling this to you and other women and men will listen and go to be check!  Yes men get this too, the actor whom played Shaft Richard Roundtree Had breast
cancer!  This was before the had the great medince they have now!

Have test done also dense breast tissue make sure to ask them if you have this!

My dear friend has it now!  I am so proud I can be there for her she just finish her chemo
treatment, I never thought I could be strong enough to help anyone is old enough to be
my daughert!  But I am strong and stronger even more!
If you have any question please write me!  My prayers are with you always!  It is ok

all breast lumps should be checked out asap!

i've had to have two screenings in the last two years. thankfully both are ok at the moment but i have to keep an eye on them incase they change. both times my dr refered me straight to the hospital for tests and i was seen in days. i have a history so i take extra care and see the dr if i have any concerns. waiting a couple of weeks and then making an appointment is not good. always do it straight away!

I am so glad many of you did not have it, and it is a awakening such as none
I have known!!   But it made me love god life so much more and my family , oh
they suffered but the strange thing is my family who lives in a different state did not
speak to me for 10 years!  My two oldest sister's from there did, and the one here never took a day off
for seven months!!!!!  I do not know how she did it , but she was there for every moment!!!  She is
my twin!  I do all of the things I love and I care for others even more!!!!!  I am a stamp collector, my twin
has been making sure I have all of the things I adore!  She went out and found another stamp album bursting made before 1937with postage stamps, it is a thrill to find something with so many stamps in it!  It will take me a long time
to catalog and research many of the older stamps!  I brought this up because she saw I was depressed and she
also bought me a old dollhosue there are only three of them made, the design was not sold with the company when
it was taken over by the new owners!  I loolk for four years on the net for this dollhouse!  the owner pass away!
They decide not to sell the blue print for this on dollhouse!  So I have the third and the olderst !    I bring this up again ]
my twin saw and made sure I was happy!  I am blessed with her love ! She also know I am a dominant person and
expect me or me!!!!!!!  I hope this was not too much?  It goes with the health topic it goes along with emotional and mental health!
