The mention of red winged blackbirds made me smile. Growing up where I did in NYS, we were surrounded by fields. Every spring, the males would come in and set up their territory...unfortunately, the way to home from school for many of us was right thru said fields. It had to be funny watching groups of kids running thru the field, or down the roadway, books covering our heads trying to avoid getting divebombed. The males are fierce during mating and nesting season. If you were lucky, you got a quick warning whistle before they'd strike, but the sneaky bastards would sneak up behind you and nail you! I got nailed once, and literally had a bleeding hole in the top of my head. Hurt like a mother bear, too!
