I really admire folks who can get over the deaths of their animal companions. I literally start crying if I LOOK at pics of pigs too long. It's horrible not having a pig--the parrot is LOVE but not furry mammal love--but losing them? Just too much. Pansy was my dad's chemo buddy. She died in my mom's arms, which was just another trauma too many.

I am wondering about the Swiss, though. If someone's piggen dies, are they all OMG LAW that they feel compelled to get another pig? Or is there some kind of animal inspector that goes around checking on pigs?

I was kinda wndering about that too, Hibbie.. how do you ENFORCE that?

although, assuming teh piggens are well socialized, the rent a piggen thing is AWESOME!!

I wouldn't use the word admire (from my perspective), but like you, I have a considerable emotional investment in the pets I've had. The waterworks still run thinking about them. I would love to have a pet, but at the same time, I just don't want to experience that sort of loss when they do go. My parents' dog is getting up there in age. I don't even like to think of it. She's so funny, has such a wonderful personality, is incredibly social and is just an all around wonderful beastie.

Gosh...why do animals have to be so adorable and why can't they last longer? :(

As to your question, it's definitely a puzzle as to how they would enforce such a law. The Swiss must have to register their pets and renew that registration on a regular basis. That's one guess.

I wonder if the rented piggies are traumatized at all by being shuffled around, or if it's just fine with them having a variety of buddies. I fully believe that animals are much more aware than what is generally thought of by most.

I think I posted this article before, but thought it would be worthwhile to post here.

Devi... the woman who rents them only rents them out once. then the piggen either lives the rest of its life with her or goes to another forever home, if I understood the article correctly.

DeviantlyD -> RE: Rent a Guinea Pig (9/25/2011 3:56:53 AM)

What I was thinking of was a scenario like this:

Guinea pig owner has two pigs of about the same age. One piggie dies. Owner rents a piggie for the left-behind piggie. The the left-behind piggie dies. The rented piggie goes back to the woman who rents them. I just wondered how it is for the rented piggie who leaves the woman's home to live with the left-behind piggie and then goes back to the woman. Know what I mean?

I am curious what the ratio of returned rent-a-piggys is.
I would think if the other pig lasts long enough, the owners would grow attached to the new one as well, no matter how they convinced themselves it was temporary in the beginning..

I don't know a single cavyslave who would willingly give one away. They suck out your soul.

That's true...although I would think that if you had it in your mind from the start that you were not going to continue to be a guinea pig owner, it might help. It would still be difficult, but at least it would help knowing the pig had a home. At least that is how I would try to view it. I know others might not be able to give them up.

I have to laugh though because...well...I can't help envisioning this serious dialogue of "what is the ratio of returned to non-returned rented guinea pigs? Is this an effective method of dealing with the two pig ownership laws in Switzerland?" and so on. ;)

But... but... It is a discussion that could actually remain civil!
And I honestly think that is a great idea. You go past the piggies and delve into the psychology of it....

The fact that you can match the piggies age is awesome.

Then again I am kinda searching for something to hook and distract my mind. [>:]

:P Har har!

But on a serious note, what sort of distractions are you looking for? I could give you LOTS of ideas, all depending on your interests.

There is a game sunshinemiss linked that had me spending far too much time on! But...it was definitely a distraction. ;)

That quiz is exactly what I needed, thanks.
The focus made me get off a spinning mind twist.

You do now. But to be fair, we didn't ask for them or want them and it was supposed to be temporary. We also have three dogs, four cats and five fish, so, we're up to our ears in animal care around here.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Rent a Guinea Pig (9/26/2011 6:38:27 AM)

You are not a twooo cavyslave, Chrissy! Totally different. That is Too Many Animals.
