I considered posting this in the Humour forum, but I know it would quickly get buried by all of the games threads. Besides, it's more whacky than funny. ;)

OMG!! That is some astounding. I heard about the Swiss law, and while I sort of agree, I sort of don't, since all my pigs were solo pigs. BUT they were also never without their human slaves.

I miss pigs.

It would probably be helpful if they amended the law...you know, so that if you have the required two guinea pigs (both of close to if not exactly the same age) and one dies...you need not get another one. Then again, I would imagine the solo guinea pig would miss his/her buddy. All in all, the rent-a-guinea pig thing would seem to work....hopefully....considering guinea pigs can't speak and all that. ;)

They are excellent communicators, though! And they do grieve, for other pigs and for their human slaves.

I once babysat a guinea pig. I don't recall it's gender -- hey, I was about 11 years old at the time. I can't even remember what I did last week, never mind umpteen years ago. :D -- I just remember it being very reclusive...wanting to hide all the time. Poor thing!

How do they communicate?

They are prey animals, and cautious. They need to be socialized and habituated to people, sounds, environments. I'm guessing the piggen you watched had a cage life with not enough contact or stimulation.

All pigs will dash to seclusion and glare at you if they are startled. They also like a "roof" over their head.

My pigs were great communicators, the key is WANTING to know what they are telling you. They make an array of sounds, and their body language is expressive. They have different greeting calls/behaviors for each person they know, they tell you when they have to GO RIGHT NOW, when they want snacks (obviously), and a whole range of other things. They are very catlike, in that they are humor-impaired, and not really motivated to do things that they don't want to, but are Rulers of teh Universe.

A prairie dog! When those first came out as pets I really was dead against them because they were wild caught and traumatised. SO CUTE though. How did you deal with the burrowing needs? I saw one shop that had an ENORMOUS plexiglas box, like ten feet on a side and six deep, full of material for them to burrow

I had glass..... 2x1x1 meter  with playgroundsand in it wich I refreshed every halfyear
Also she had straw and hay in it, wich got refreshed weekly... Lots of work, but worthwhile.
But then, she was good friends with my doggies, so she could run free in the house....

HM's ex asked if we could watch hers for a couple of weeks while she was moving (about six months ago) I was adamantly saying no, but he finally said ok.

I just got done cleaning the cage.

Again.

Want  a couple?

Well yeah you have to change the cage every day. Every other day for sure.

No more pet related heartbreak for us. We just can't handle it.

My sister had a guinea pig she got as a birthday present when she was maybe 12.  Her name was Patches, she actually had two litters of baby pigs, which all found homes.  Patches was a free range piggy.....she lived in a 20 gallon long fish tank, but spent most of her time out of it when anyone was home.  She'd wander where ever, talking to anyone who'd listen.  She was a character, for sure!

Salad was a staple at our house for dinner, and we'd keep all the green stuff leftovers for her for treats.  She got fresh veggies pretty much on demand, but someone would give her some when we got home from school.  When my mom would come home, she'd ask Patches if she was given her "goodies", and she'd lie thru her little teeth!  Mom didn't believe us until the day  I gave Patches some greens, and I told Mom to watch....I then asked Patches if she'd gotten any goodies today....she had her mouth FULL of them, and still lied!

We'd have to warn folks when they'd come over that she was out.....it was a little unnerving to be sitting at the table, or on the couch, and see her darting around, looking for trouble.  But the fact that she got along with the cat was what most folks found amazing.  Like all of the furry creatures we had,  she was sperled rotten!  Pets????  Nah....they are truly family.  Even my dad cried when Patches finally crossed over.  She lived for what seemed like 10 years......but was probably more like 6 or 7.
