My sister had a guinea pig she got as a birthday present when she was maybe 12. Her name was Patches, she actually had two litters of baby pigs, which all found homes. Patches was a free range piggy.....she lived in a 20 gallon long fish tank, but spent most of her time out of it when anyone was home. She'd wander where ever, talking to anyone who'd listen. She was a character, for sure! Salad was a staple at our house for dinner, and we'd keep all the green stuff leftovers for her for treats. She got fresh veggies pretty much on demand, but someone would give her some when we got home from school. When my mom would come home, she'd ask Patches if she was given her "goodies", and she'd lie thru her little teeth! Mom didn't believe us until the day I gave Patches some greens, and I told Mom to watch....I then asked Patches if she'd gotten any goodies today....she had her mouth FULL of them, and still lied! We'd have to warn folks when they'd come over that she was out.....it was a little unnerving to be sitting at the table, or on the couch, and see her darting around, looking for trouble. But the fact that she got along with the cat was what most folks found amazing. Like all of the furry creatures we had, she was sperled rotten! Pets???? Nah....they are truly family. Even my dad cried when Patches finally crossed over. She lived for what seemed like 10 years......but was probably more like 6 or 7.
