A quote from a movie I am watching at the moment, and a very enticing collection of words, but I wonder what would it take for those words to become our reality ?

The destruction of humanity and the rise of a new species. Or, on a slightly less pessimistic note, advances in technology which mean that every human need can be catered for with little or no need for us to work for it. I'm talking robots to do all the work and Star Trek (it's an ST movie you're watching, right?) style replicators coupled with unlimited free energy.

Actually there would be no need for economics. For that place to exist there would have to be no scarcity of anything. As soon as there is scarcity of anything of value there is economics, and as soon as there is scarcity then acquisition of the scarce resource becomes a goal.

Which all bears down to individual power seeking, what a shit species we are, better hurry up and destroy ourselves before we destroy everything else in our quest for individual power.

Wrong... All the spoils will go to the winner of the annual Snomobile race on Lake Winnipesaukie.

There would be no material spoils, since there would be no scarcity, anybody can get anything anytime. All contests would be for pride only.

well, if you have money then wealth (or creating more) isnt necessarily a driving force now. If you believe that the Gates have their charity to better the rest of humanity (and not merely a tax dodge as some claim), then there is perhaps a twinkling of that now...

"Johnson and at least some his peers in Born Rich seem to recognize that the best antidote to decadence and rot is work. Josiah Hornblower, the Whitney-Vanderbilt heir, dropped out of college for a couple of years to work in the oil fields of Texas. They were "probably the best two years of my life, the most important years of my life," he said. "Really, what I learned is that working hard makes me feel good." Now he goes to work every day as a financial analyst."

And youre proud he's your boyfriend Im sure!
And its Aneirin's brave new world, not mine. I already said it could never happen, since there will ALWAYS be scarcity of something.

Yeah, scarcity of conscience and morality.

But hey , whatever, as long as money keeps coming in, fuck everyone else.

But yeah, I for one would like to see an end to this shite life, for sure history has taught us nothing, we are too blind on our own desire for comfort.

For I do believe the good of the many exceeds he good of the one

Yeah, I have socialist leanings, but I am not a socialist

I agree...but the pursuit of the good of the one is what maximizes the good of the many.

Yeah I have capitalist leanings but..oh...wait.
