DesFIP -> RE: Its that time of the year... (9/30/2011 4:45:58 PM)

I keep waiting for the sign to go up in the grocery store, saying flu shots are coming. If they don't post it soon, I'll have to drive up to the county seat to get one.

I'm not yet 60 so I won't get a pneumonia shot yet. They last about ten years, so when I hit a decade I know I need a tetanus and a pneumonia.

KeriB I do not believe in getting flu shots never had a nemonya shot either, have never had one my entire adult life, and I have never gotten the flu nor nemonya. My parents both believe in flu shots and they're sick as a dog 5-6 times a winter, theirs do not lessen the severity of the cold or flu , nor lesson how often they are sick. All though my dr did tell me it was super important that diabetics and pre diabetics get their nemonya shot so I did get that.

I think you are trying to talk about pneumonia. Please look up words you don't know for proper spelling. There are enough of us nurses on the sight that you might make a few of us cross.

It's the internet. Speeling doesn't actually count here. You figured out what she was trying to say, so what's the problem?

Plus most of us know that TFB has some learning disabilities so we cut her slack.

However at 20something, she isn't in a high risk category re flu shots. Over 50 or chronic illnesses are. Same with pneumonia, at her age she won't die from it, she probably wouldn't even need hospitalization. At my age it's a whole different ball game.

I think the word you are looking for is "site" not "sight".  As a nurse you should know that "sight" is not the same as "site".

i stopped getting flu shots because they make me sick AND i always get the flu anyway.
i'm not going to pay someone so i can get the flu twice, no thanks.

lizi -> RE: Its that time of the year... (10/1/2011 4:56:25 PM)

We have to get one for school, our clinical sites will require proof. I was waiting for Oct, they said to get it then. I'll go somewhere in the next day or two and get it. I haven't been getting one up till now and  haven't been sick in a few years, but that's not surprising considering the kids are off to college and there's no one at home to share germs with. My guy and I have just stayed apart if someone was under the weather and I haven't caught anything from anyone at school...yet. When I was an elementary school teacher holy cow, sick as a dog several times a winter. Glad that's done with.

I've got a question for those of you that have gotten the shot, have any of you still gotten the flu? If so was it less severe than before you got the shot?

I had mine in April.  Everyone around me has been getting sick as a dog - friends, co-workers, our esteemed leaders - I had a single day of feeling unwell and I've been fine otherwise.  There's no doubt in my mind that the shot taught my immune system to recognise the flu virus everyone was encountering and it knocked it on the head pretty quickly.

Remember, the flu shot immunises you against the three most common variants running around.  As long as you're using a killed virus with no RNA/DNA, there's no way you can get sick from the shot.  If, on the other hand, the shot contains an attenuated virus, then there's a possibility for the virus to mutate into something more effective.

I loathe people who rail against immunisation.  It's the worst kind of superstitious Luddite mentality and it kills children.  Immunisation is one of the key factors in the drop in mortality - particularly infant and child mortality - for most of the western world.

FR

"there's no way you can get sick from the shot"

Bullshit, and you might know it but ignored it. That info is all over the place, some people do get it.

Those people would have gotten it anyway unless they were never exposed, that's why in society it is more desirable for most of the population to have the shot. But if someone is sequestered there is no reason.

And some of us don't like the idea of them shooting shit in our veins that we don't know what is, AND NEITHER DO THEY !

Take the shot, and stay away from me. You see I need the shot because it makes sure you can't get the flu, so if I come around you and I have the flu you can get it so I must have the shot, so you don't get it despite the fact that you had the shot. See how that works ? Are you fucking immune or not ? If you are then I don't need the shot.

I need the shot to make sure that YOU don't get the flu despite the fact that you are supposedly immune, see how that works ?

Fuck you.

(when I say that I don't mean you personally, I mean society, if I mean you I will put it in italics or something)

T^T

I don't care what anyone says, everytime I was forced to get a flu shot, Ive gotten seriously ill......the first one put me in the hospital w/pneumonia, and the rest of the times, I got bronchitis that lasted for months.  I've only gotten the flu once in my life, and that went to walking pneumonia......coincidence?  I think not.  ( I say forced, because I was in the military, and they make you get all that shit whether you want it or not.  I finally got a doc to listen to me, and he put a waiver in my records so I didn't have to get the shots anymore.)

I'll take my chances with the bug, thank you.  My system is pretty healthy, and seems to handle exposure to crap fine.  Even last year, when everyone at work was sick and dragging shit around, I didn't get sick.  I take common precautions to prevent getting sick, it seems to work.

Living in Hawai`i, but coming from a place that has all 4 seasons can be a little disorienting because the years can go by and it feels like one endless summer. With that said, hopefully you can better grasp the bit of humour in the next line. ;)

When I saw the thread title, the first thing that popped into my head was "damn is it tax time already???"

:D

Ah yes, children, those well known vectors of disease and infection! lol
I think my kids' pediatrician used that line to me and I've always loved it.

I went and asked the pharmacist when they're getting the flu shots in and he still doesn't know. It's October already, damnit, they should be scheduled by now.

With that said, most people say they have the flu when they actually have a bad cold. No, a vaccine against influenza does not ward off colds. It wards off influenza only. Which I have had once in my life and never want again. Two weeks of high fever, muscle aches, inability to get out of bed or do anything. Quite different than a bad cold which you can drag yourself around doing things while sick. You can't manage to do anything with a true case of influenza. You'll faint while trying because it really is that bad.

I was thinking pumpkins, caramel apples, changing leaves and boots!
