Oh shessh, your plan is to go sponge off of someone else?

I'm done.

OP:
There's always ways to make money, hell technically I am 'unemployed' right now, but I still make ends meet. I spend time taking care of an elderly family member, in turn I get a little financial help for the hours I put in. I use software to make virtual content online and sell it in applicable places, I babysit, I'm even thinking of volunteering to do a test for a local university who will pay me for the time I spend doing it with gift certificates. There's loads of ways to get by even without a formal paycheque, just get outside the box and find them.

The total sum of the people on this thread are not crazy. How you run your life is your business, your formal question was, 'should I stop looking?' The answer is a resounding yes. That should be the end of the thread, if you need help with general life problems the off-topic forum might be the place for you. Last I checked this was a BDSM general forum not a 'how can I make my life not suck' forum.

Look, it's all well and good to say, "There's always hope and/or a way to make money!", but the truth is that that is a generalization which doesn't really apply to a rapidly failing economy. I have seen my situation! I have asked, I have applied, I have tried to the limit. Please, please stop trying to use your own experiences and assume that hard work is the only problem here. It isn't!

As for what I'm trying to do to better my situation, I'm following up on the ICC lead given to me by another poster whose name I will edit into this once I go back and look at it, and I'm going to the gym right now to discuss a joint CPA effort regarding selling some health products.

I said they owed me a few favors, as in a few jobs to get me on my feet. They'll only do it if I'm not living with my folks, though.

It's a shame when people skim posts. They miss out on important facts. Like the fact that I am trying and not just sitting on this.

Or mayhap I had forgotten to mention that I worked through my high school years as a basement finishing contractor to help my Dad get by until he got a (much improved) job, and only managed to get a diploma because I'm a hardcore student. Look, if you all want to know my entire story, just ask. The way I'm presenting it now makes it look like a counter to every argument thrown at me, and I know that makes me look bad. I an tell you the whole thing, start to finish.

Hell, I'm even willing to bring up the official records to prove it. There's documentation and all of that.

Chatte, if you're going to judge me based on what little you know, take the time to know the whole thing. If you want, we can even meet in person. I try to go to sloshes and the like, and I am very willing to see you face to face, especially if you know someone in radio. This might just be wonderful news!

You are working on your issues? How? By seeking validation from a message board?

What did you do, today, to get a job? Improve your prospects for a job? Improve your weight issue? Improve your health issues?

You are still here whining when, if you were truly motivated, you would have put in your first 8 hour shift as a dishwasher.

You want to know how *I* got through school? I worked 3 jobs: a work study job, a 5 am doughnut counter job, and a weekend waitress gig. In other words, I worked my ass off.

After giving up a very successful career to raise my children, I got divorced. Guess what I did? I worked two jobs, a regular 9-5 during the day and a banquet bartending job that meant I was on my feet for 6-8 hours after working my day job. I was 45 and had a bad back.

I didn't whine, and I didn't expect a free ride from anyone.

You would be so lucky as to meet me Sparky. If one iota of my motivation rubbed off on you, your entire life would change.

Bring it on. Let's agree to meet up at an IYK or INCENDA slosh.

This bears repeating...

So you know, people can view your posts from your profile page, so with regard to your OP concerning whether or not you should "stop searching", you've pretty much GUARANTEED that ANY girl with a brain that reviews this thread will NEVER get within 10 feet of you.  Lucky you... you've just manifested the answer to your question!!! [:D]

I have read the whole thread. I also, like Lance, would be interested to know what your plans might be after your parents move away as that'll be a bit of a crunch time, no doubt.

My eldest son works for a charity that helps young people get out of situations such as the one you're in, and various others, many, much worse involving addiction and debt.

He knows that being *stuck* in a situation due to circumstances, EVEN if those circumstances look pathetic to others, does not necessarily mean that the youngsters do not want to move forward. A large majority of them haven't had supportive, encouraging parents ( and I don't mean financially). Many of them missed out on vital basic education too.

He, and his co-workers provide the basic steps to shift these young people from debilitating *going no-where*  to a place where they finish up in employment of some kind, renting a small flat with some short term plans in place. Much of the job is basically providing short term emotional and practical support. It's not always easy to shift your life around on your own just because *everyone else* has/can*.

Actually, my son is very good at his job as he spent quite a few years being a bit of a loser himself in his early 20's so he can speak from bitter experience :-)

Not all people that feel *stuck* and appear negative are sat on their arses for the sake of it.

agirl

Really? Aw, man, do you guys have an Indianapolis branch? I can't really travel, but I'd love to see if that would lead anywhere.

'Fraid we're in the UK and it's a UK charity.

Ah, let me clarify. I am totally willing to do lesser work. It just hasn't happened, no matter who I apply to. I am seeking VA since it would give me some very nice startup capital to try CPA+PPC. I don't arrogantly assume that I'm going to start at the top, and I do realize it is a difficult thing to break into.

Ok, I wasn't going to say anything up until this point, but what exactly is "lesser work"?  Do you mean something that isn't a cushy job in a studio where you do voice overs?

I guess it's just Kana and Me who will admit to flipping burgers in our day, but I'll tell you right now that I was never ashamed of an honest day's pay, even when the pay sucked.  I wasn't living with parents at 22 and just accepting jobs that I felt were 'worthy' of Me.  It's been a long time since I had two part time jobs at minimum wage to make ends meet, but honestly, that's what I did at your age.  I'm practical like that.

Maybe, that might want to be the approach you want to start looking at.  Instead of thinking of that voice over job so you can invest in something else, the income you do get before the parents move should be put away for the surgery you need.  Be willing to take that job at McDonalds because you know you have a medical need that must be attended.  No, it's not the most exciting or glamorous short term goal in the world, but at least it is a goal and it is something that you can work towards.

I get that you've heard this kind of stuff enough already, but I honestly do think you need a reassessment.  Not just on the matter of if your highest priority should be a sub right now (it shouldn't) but a different outlook on some other things as well.

I was just saying lesser-paying work in comparison to voice acting, lol, and that I was willing to pursue lesser-paying work.

Add me to that list. I worked clearing tables in a fast food court all through college. My only free time was one evening on the weekend - provided I didn't have an exam to study for.

OP if I were you I would grab ANY job I could find. I know it's hard to find work but work IS out there. All I'm seeing from you (and yes I've read the whole thread) is a bunch of excuses of why you aren't off your ass looking. No I don't think you're looking or you wouldn't have been posting here all day.

Yeah life is tough. I go to work with tremendous chronic pain. I'm not now nor have I ever whined about it, it's life so I deal with it best I can.

Me too. As far as 'lesser' type work goes I've been a burger flipper, a janitor, a maid, a waitress, a house-cleaner, a store clerk, counter person, a barista, etc. There is nothing that is beneath me in doing as long as it's honest work and me or my family needs the money. Nothing gets done half-assed either.

LaTigresse -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 2:48:48 PM)

Oh sheesh..........to make a list of everything I've done to earn a paycheck.

Most physically demanding would have been hauling landscaping rocks up a hill, one at a time, by hand, for two weeks. While the pervy rich old fucker sat by his pool sipping 7 and 7 and watching me. Dirtiest would have been either detassling or pulling chickens.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 2:58:24 PM)

Do I really want to know what detasseling and pulling a chicken is? <turns green>

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 2:58:41 PM)

I have never worked in the food service industry! I have been a file clerk, a data entry person, a courier...yanno, WORK. There's another person on the boards who whines about there not being work of a pleasing nature. [8|]

Missokyst -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 3:02:26 PM)

Since the subject sort of got way-laid I put one on "lesser work" over in off-topic

No, of course there isn't work for you to be found.
In though economical times employers get to be more picking in who they hire, even for "lesser" positions.

That means like a dimwit like you, who is all excuses, complaints and whining will not even be able to get a job flipping burgers because any interviewer with half a brain will pick up on your serious attitude problem the second you walk in his office.

A difficult economy simple means that in order to secure a job, any job, you need to be able to positively distinguish yourself from all the other candidates by making your future employer KNOW that you'll be better, and you'll work harder, and you'll complain less, than all the other losers that come whining to him for a job they feel they're entitled too while they can't even bother to present themselves well.

You very obviously don't have the attitude necessary to get hired in a rough economy, you've proven that more than once in the short span of this topic. So sure, I believe that's you've "tried" to get work and got rejected over and over again. However, it's you're own self-pity narcissistic drama that causes you to not get hired... not the economy.

And let me tell you something else, sweet peach, the above applies to ALL jobs in the current job market, including the voice over job you're coveting and setting all your hopes up.
I can guarantee you that, no matter how good you're voice actually is, there is NO way in hell that you will ever get hired for a job like that if you can't present the attitude necessary to get you hired for a job flipping burgers.

Endivius -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 3:23:56 PM)

I told you how, and you've done nothing but bicker with the people on the boards; when you should have put that energy into fixing your situation. You seem to believe that if you explain your hardships, that it's not complaining. Everyone here disagrees with you on this view but somehow it is not sinking in. I do not care if you end up destitute and starving, you were offered help and you have not utilized what was given to you. Mediocrity suites you.

wolvenreign -> RE: Should I stop searching? A question of youth. (9/30/2011 3:31:29 PM)

I think you should have a strong talk with your parents,OP. They have an obligation to give you a good start in life and they have failed.

They don't have an obligation to give you a good start in life. It would be nice, but there's no obligation. We're also lacking on all the background in this particular situation, besides the fact that voice work is right up there with acting in terms of practicality of employment.

Instead of racking up loans, go to the community colleges to complete pre-major work or get a practical certificate. Avoid the for-profit guys at all costs!
