The public official has a right to disagree, but not in an official capacity.
Agreed though with the bit about religion. Just because someone uses the word God doesn't make it about religion. Bigots exploit religion to justify their bigotry, when in reality God is no more than their imaginary friend who agrees with everything they say, everything they think and everything they do.
