playfulotter -> Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/3/2011 9:38:18 PM)

I knew the local sales tax was high but not this high...10.25%...do you know the rate where you live?

TheHeretic -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/3/2011 9:48:34 PM)

7.25% here, but all the stores are across the county line, where it is 8.75%. It was higher, but the state voters refused to extend the temporary increases of a few years ago, and they expired over the summer.

We got the property tax bill today, too. Fully 1/3 is voted indebtedness, and additional assessments.

littlewonder -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/3/2011 10:26:17 PM)

Sales tax here in MD is 5% but here in Baltimore we also have a hotel tax and a bottle tax and quite a few other types of taxes I think. You get taxed on pretty much everything you can imagine.

tazzygirl -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/3/2011 10:55:23 PM)

6.1% here.

susie -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 12:27:55 AM)

In the UK our VAT, which is our version of a sales tax is at 20%

shallowdeep -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 1:40:42 AM)

Hmm. According to the California Board of Eqaulization, the highest sales tax rate in any city is supposedly only 9.75%, although, as TheHeretic pointed out, that's down 1% from the rates in June. I guess there might be some weird local districts that push things up, though. Here, it's 8.25% currently. Fairly recent (July 2011) map of the entire US can be found here: Sales Tax: Combined State and Average Local Rates.

siamsa24 -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 1:50:02 AM)

Ours is 7.75% so I try to do most of my shopping by my work in the next county over where the rate is 6.25%

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 5:46:56 AM)

We have harmonized(Provincial sales tax + Goods and Services Tax) sales tax in Nova Scotia, Canada, it's at about 13% right now.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 5:51:34 AM)

Local sales tax here is 9.25% which is a bit high but TN has no state income tax and our property taxes are really low.  Gas taxes are below the national norm as well.
As an example, My office building is about 4200 SF and I pay less taxes on that even at the higher commercial rate than a person on the other side pays for a small  3BR/1.5BA house in Jersey.

In the county, property taxes on a basic house (1200 SF 3 BR 2 BA) is about 400/year.

Hijack addendum:

Ok...for those who have a relatively high sales tax....do you also have state income tax as well? If you do, how much is that?

Here we have a 5% sales tax, although some counties are as high as 6%.....but we also have a state income tax which is about 6%.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 6:19:14 AM)

No state income tax in TN.

LaTigresse -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 7:23:49 AM)

We have a state income tax, federal income tax and the sales tax varies quite a bit from town to town. Here is a good one for you. I live in one county, pay property tax for that county, but if I buy something relatively locally to be delivered to my house, like LP, not only do I have to pay the sales tax for the county their main office is in, but an additional amount for the schools the county my mail box is in, which is not the county I actually live in.

Here in Iowa City, property tax is considerably higher than where I live. Sales tax is also higher here than at home. So for things like horse supplies where it would be easier to get on an errand run during lunch, I wait and pick it up at the company's other store in a town closer to home, because the sales tax is lower.

Do not even get me started on the crazy differences in gas prices around here. Iowa City is always ten cents a gallon more than near where I live. Yet, if I drive west from home on the state highways, the price gets even lower. BUT if I leave Iowa City and drive west (just 60ish miles north but parallel to the state highways running west from my house) the price gets even higher than in Iowa City......usually. Until you get to DesMoines which varies depending upon the neighbourhood.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/4/2011 7:57:12 AM)

8.25, but no income tax. I also live right across the border from Oregon, which has no sales tax. As you can imagine, lots of people here do their shopping in Oregon.

Paladin9 -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/6/2011 9:46:15 PM)

CA basic is 7.75% but some cities add to that approved by the voters (dummys).

It could get worse. The State has withheld millions from the cities, counties and special districts to try and balance the State budget. To get them off his back moonbeam (brown) is proposing to allow them to tax as they wish. We are in big trouble if the cities, etc get the right to set tax rates.

To get around prop 13 we now have "fees" that officially are not a tax. If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you. The sheeple voters of CA just keep approving these billion dollar bond measures that cost 2-3 times the bond amount.

If you wanna start counting all the taxes, I'm sure we have you beat, up here in canada. [sm=bury.gif]

I thought the dreaded VAT was 17.5% in the UK but I must be behind the times as I heard that Cameron increased it a lot. VAT is pretty bad as where I am - a fairly painful 21% and it could increase a good deal with the forthcoming budgets...

Thanks for making me look it up again...Although I guess the place I read it at was wrong. I just looked up where I live and it is 9.25% (This only includes county tax, sales tax and use tax only).

Yes.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Local Tax rates where you live.... (10/7/2011 10:53:18 PM)

8.75 in my county. Also, Ca. state income tax and property tax on every effing thing you own that has to be registered, like vehicles, boats, trailers, motorhomes. They don't tax groceries (yet) but tax the crap out of everything else at various rates.
