I came across this "This Day in History" clip here and wondered if any of you across the pond or for that matter anyone....has an answer to why the song was banned? Oct 10 1962 The British Broadcasting Company bans "Monster Mash" -- the Halloween-themed novelty tune by Bobby "Boris" Pickett -- for being "offensive." The BBC never specifies precisely what it is about the song that's problematic.

they used to play it in the seventies on the Top of the Pops show at halloween bashes too..not sure if it was unbanned or what but I remember it very well on tv(the beeb) My recollections anyway...

Just from Wiki The song was re-released several times and appeared in the Billboard charts on three occasions after the original release — December 1962, August 1970 and May 1973.[7] The BBC had banned the record from airplay in 1962 on the grounds that the song was "too morbid". It was eventually released in the United Kingdom in 1973, where it peaked at #3 in early October. It re-entered the British Charts again on November 2, 2008 at #60. Monster Mash

Monster Mash was around when I was a kiddie - it was played at discos before I reached my teens without any problem. Like the Axeman said, they banned some stuff mostly in response to self-styled "guardian of British morals" Mary Whitehouse. Once that interfering old trout turned up her toes, the bbc managed to transmit a lot more fun stuff [:D]

The BBC was very censorous. They banned a lot of stuff like the Stones' "I can't get no satisfaction", Floyd's "Arnold Layne" for crossdressing references etc. with a little more justification. Strangely they didn't ban "Walk on the Wild Side" which was way more explicit (e.g. "giving head")! Sometimes things got through cause they weren't up with the lingo. Apparently they took a lot of songs off the airwaves with the 1991 war in Iraq! Seems the Beeb care a lot about the feelings of the British public too. I read in Private Eye that after Princess Di died they also took off unrelated TV shows that might be upsetting to viewers!!

It all depends which accent you like. There's so many regional ones. Mine, for instance, makes Americans think I'm an Aussie, for some reason. Some of the regional accents are great, but some would be difficult for people to understand, I guess. It's all good, though. Lucy, I'd hope the wonderful mixture of Brits and Americans on here has helped to change some predetermined minds, anyway. [;)]

that's true; i think most of us who think we don't have accents are just intrigued by any accent. =p but i remember my ex making fun of people who sounded "northern." =p i noticed a little difference, but nothing to make fun of. there were a few people i met who were difficult to understand, but for the most party, it was all enjoyable to listen to. haha

BHGOth...I know my attitude has changed a great deal from when I lived over 'ome. Ive made some lifelong friends and met some wonderful people so I think thats a yes:) I look forward to meeting many many more:)
