An old friend of mine has a sex toy shop, and we used to talk about how people often fell into two camps when it came to shopping for their first butt plug....
1. they would buy the smallest one possible.... take it home, try it out and say, "is it even IN yet? man, what was I thinking??/ I gotta go back and get a bigger one..."
2. they would buy a huge one.....take it home, try it out and say, "holy shit...what was I thinking??? I gotta go back and buy a much smaller one...."
Different people, different size butt holes and different tolerance levels. Start smaller and work your way up, the more relaxed you are, the better the chance that you can take a larger one. Use lots and lots of lube (too much lube is almost enough...), if it don't fit don't force it, and if it doesn't feel good, pause, slow down, relax and try again later.
Rectal tears are no fun (at best) and can lead to serious health problems (at worst).
I'd personally suggest you go with a smaller one. Most people have appetites that are larger than their assholes, a medium size butt plug can definitely feel like a huge one.
