Banks cant do what they do for free so when the government forces them to stop covering their costs in one area they are forced to try to make up that loss somewhere else, so here we are.

The swipe fees are not required to keep the lights on.   They pay for champagne to go with the caviar lifestyle.

If  banks are in distress, it is from bad bets placed at a time when income from gambling was too good to turn away.  They are not going broke because Lucy uses a debit card 24 times a month.

Government responded to the demands of small business (who wanted the swipe fees off their backs), and not the demands of consumers.  How we stubbornly end up blaming government for the shell game perpetrated by the banksters is beyond me.

My merchant company charges me .50 to key in per transaction. I think it's the same to swipe.  I pay .75 per authorization, (not necessary but a good idea or someone will notice, give you a bad card and wind up with free product). Where they get me the most is the discount rate. If I was to swipe I would get a better rate. I think I'm payin .50 or .75 to batch out.  I just got an I phone and I'm lookin at way better deals than what I have now to run card transactions through it. And to think I was considering a satellite terminal at more than $40 a month. The smart phone is the way to go now.  I do business away from the office so that's why I have to key everything in when I get back. Also, with the smart phone I can get a swiper and save .7 - .9 %  off the rate.

One other thing worth noting is this new freakin annual thing called a compliance fee. It's $130 for my company and this is the 3rd or maybe 4th year I have had to cough up for that.

You weren't?

What the hell is this?

You quite explicitly claimed the swipes cost the banks 44 cents. You lied.

Thats not the post you were responding to, ken, but nice try. In the post you were responding to I wrote, "They dont get forty cents a swipe, not even close." Present tense.

Why not try honesty, its easier and you dont look nearly as foolish.

Liar, you quoted the post where I responded to your claim above. If you were changing the subject why did you quote me pointing out that you were wrong about what the costs had been.

My money is already in a credit union. I haven't had a bank in over 20 years.

Ditto.

Apparently your computer needs a new screen. Yellow highlights added. You called him a liar because you cant tell present tense from past tense. You owe him an apology. Not holding my breath either.

"Debit cards save the banking institutions money,"

I save them even more. I deal in cash. One day I might get a debit card for online purchases but that's about it. I'm all growed up now and can hold on to my own money. Or put it somewhere. I don't need a bank.

And I did jumpthrough, but one thing caught me. ONE customer uses their bank card 25 times a month ? What are they fucking crazy ? If it's a dime it's thirty bucks a year. If it's a half a buck it is $150 a year, over ten bucks a month. That is a twelve pack guys, and girls that is a package or some of that weird shit you buy that we don't want to know about. If it's a buck apiece that's some people's fucking car insurance !

You, anyone ? Actually trust the banks ? You have got to be kidding.

T^T

Apparently you cannot read for context. Why not go back to figuring out how to spin BoA's downgrade to a negative outlook.

A better idea, after you apologize for your lying, is to figure out how to tie that to Countrywide when several banks without mortgage operations are also being discussed for downgrades.

How could it be tied to Countrywide now? Presumably almost all of their bad loans are already foreclosed. BoA is simply failing on its own. Driving away customers by charging $60 a year for a debit card turns out to have been a terrible idea.

We're not talking about a charge to the customer - this is the charge to the retailer.

And how is BOA's collection of fees from the customer going to help the retailer? I'm not up on this whole situation, but it sounds like a way to recoup those overdraft fees - which used to result in $17.5 billion dollars annually.

~FR~

Long before this I changed my Wells Fargo accts to a Local bank that still gives me cash back when I use my debit card. I canceled my BOA Credit Cards a while back as well.

Just like any business, Banks and financial institutions should be successful based on making good decisions and good customer service.

Likewise.  Banks have some features that businesses can use, but for a consumer, I see no advantage a bank has over a CU.

I use BOA (and have my co-workers use BOA) because I can do instant transfers each payday at no cost. They get their money as soon as it leaves my account, something I (and they) appreciate. So, I'll suck up the $5.00 fee, but I think it's bullshit.
