Nice thread topic, Tazzy (and Lucy too, I guess).

There are some things I'm going to look for in anyone who wants my vote, but there would also be considerable variance in any list, depending on the office the individual is seeking. For an executive, I place great value in prior experience with holding personal power, and carrying the burden of responsibility for the lives and well-being of others. For a legislator, that isn't as important in the big picture.

In general:
Brains. Not merely educational pedigree and cultural sophistication, but in terms of common sense and insightful perception.

Clarity of moral and ethical vision.

Pragmatism and practicality.

Integrity, empathy, and intelligence.

Everything else can be supplied by Cabinet appointees.

Someone who rejects the political parties.
Someone who believes government should limit itself to protecting people from one another, not from themselves.
Someone who believes in freedom.
Someone who believes in transparency.
Someone who knows that government serves the people, not the other way around.
Someone who believes power should be the means to bring peace, not an end to itself.
Someone who realizes that the perfect mustn't be the enemy of the good, but that not all compromise is good compromise.
Someone who recognizes the value in disparate views and opinions.
Someone who does not change their stances because they are unpopular, but is capable of admitting when their positions are incorrect.
Someone who would not trade liberty for security.
Someone who recognizes that their religious beliefs are not only not the only ones, but not at all relevant to their candidacy.
Someone who will obliterate all hints of corporatism and replace it with real, lightly regulated capitalism; who recognizes that the only place of government in industry is to keep industry from harming the individual.

The closest I could come would be Jefferson. Jesse Ventura comes closer than most, but is still imperfect. Ron Paul, who I currently support, is not this. He's the lesser of all evils, but very much not my ideal.

Im not so sure about Cain, Firm.... and I dont mind you using mine as an example.

I see him stating clearly what he believes... I also see him back peddling fast when called out on his beliefs that differ from the party line. The back peddling is my issue.

As far as bashing him, trust me, if I were doing that, I could go much further than I already have. I dont like his 999 plan because, once again, it favors the "haves" over the "have nots" as opposed to a true flat tax that everyone pays an equal share into. even Cain admits some will be taxed heavier than others. There is no excuse for that.... not even at the 1% level. I dont want to pay less than someone else... and I sure dont want to pay more.

He suggests his tax plan will replace the income, plus extra, that the current system takes in now. Imagine how much faster, how much more money, and the quicker rate if all those tax loopholes he offers businesses and the rich werent included. Without even going into percentages and such, tax loopholes is what they are saying is wrong with the current system, and here is Cain proposing a new system with tax loopholes.

Now, you may consider the above as "nit picking" but I do not.
