I think we may have trick or treated at this guy's house when we lived in Calgary...or at least at one of his cohorts in the whole Jesus Ween thing.

I am very much against the idea of trying to 'Christianize' Halloween. And whoever thinks that the little blonde haired girl at the door, wearing the fairy princess costume is wearing a "demonic costume" needs their head examined!

Quite frankly, I don't offer to share my religion with others, unless they ask. So yes, I do find it offensive when others volunteer their religion to myself and my daughter. If I wanted to hear about it, I'd ask. And she's certainly bright enough, and informed enough, to ask her own questions as well at this point.

As for the actual incident a few years ago, trick or treating one dark Halloween night in Calgary... We didn't realize until we'd gotten home that the 'comic' that she'd received from one particular house was a Christian comic about the evils of worshipping anything other than 'God'. She was rather disgusted about the whole thing. The next morning, my 10 year old daughter asked me to go with her to knock on the door of the house that had handed out the comic. She solemnly handed the comic back to the gentleman who answered the door and told him "No thanks. I have my own God. You can keep yours" and then walked away. I nearly burst with pride!

We all do that, all the time, right here on the boards. Everyone does it, everywhere. What is so different from you flaunting your opinion right here in this posting and him flaunting his religion on his doorstep?

As a general rule, an opinion doesnt promise an afterlife or eternal damnation. Neither do opinions have a reputation of being the cause of wars that kill hundreds of thousands.
That's reserved for religion.
For some folks, it's an awesome thing but it's best kept behind closed doors (like a penis).

In fact, if you reread Matthew Ch 24, you will see that it is advised to be private with your worship.


Actually that is reserved for some religious people who believe that way. Religion itself doesn't do anything. It's the people who believe in it who do.

Nobody is forcing the kids to stop at his house, are they? Who gives a fuck what he hands out, it's not like he's giving razor apples, or rat poison.

That's the Christian reading, though. It used to be the celtic (and dead pagan) new year before it got co-opted like Saturnalia, so it's not inconceivable that all sorts of crap of that sort went on with that.
(This line about the Devil's birthday, on the other hand, is complete and utter crap. He's never a Scorpio...)

Actually I did know that. That is why it is called trick-or-treat. You pick the one you want to have to deal with. But IMO(again) it has evolved into something other than what it started out as. A lot of history does that. Christmas is another very good example of what I would consider a childs holiday and no longer what it started out as being about.

By the logic of some of you, when Christian kids come to my house selling things or collecting money for their youth group it would be OK giving them a satanic bible? Or a treatise about atheism and it's merits? Or how about a Koran? I'm sure any of those would create quite a stir.

I would never do any of those things, because I believe parents have a right to control their kids' religious upbringing, Fundamentalist Christians are the first people to insist on that, with their demands that Halloween not be acknowledged in schools and that certain books be banned from libraries because the books don't reflect a christian point of view. The harry potter series, for example. Why would I not have the same right to choose what my kids were exposed to?

Yes,I know this.It is the fundie-rightie-scardie superstitious bullies who are into this,true that.They have an oppinion on EVERYTHING in our culture and if it isn`t "Jesus approved"[8|],it is devilish/evil/bad.

Any religion or beleif no matter how sacred or dear or ancient, is satan`s work.

The fundies think of themselves as Jesus` little agents here on earth and that everything boils down to a fight between good and evil.

And of course,the fundies are on the side of good.[8|]

Pagan religions,Buddhism, Shintoism,the beleifs that native Americans,north,central and south,Indian religions,etc. kind of all become victims to this Christian-good vs everything-else-devil mindset.

I think almost all cutures have at least one event where death is laughed at and taken not as seriously, as it usually does.The Carnivals,held all over the Caribbean and south of the boarder have a mock death quality, with colorful masks and sweets/cakes made into skullhead and devilheads,etc.It`s a healthy way to vent the angst we all have about the subject and a fun way too.

Not sure if All Hollow`s Eve or All Saint`s Day started of as what/how we celibrate Halloween today but it certainly isn`t about satan.

don't answer the door or just say "no thanks" and shut the door. Then again I tend to not open my door to total strangers. I creep it open just enough to ask who it is. If they say they are Jehovah's Witness I say not interested and shut the door. Simple. Why do people make things so complicated?

I have been and even have a copy and enjoy reading the Koran. I told her thank you for the copy and we parted ways. Why would I want to burn her place down? I thought it was a nice gesture from her.
