I wouldn't particularly want a Bible in my treat bag (though I'd prefer it to candy corn), and I understand how folks might resent someone's trying to convert their kids.

Yet it seems to me that Mr. Bible Giver is creating what could be a valuable teachable moment. Folks might use the opportunity to discuss what the Bible is, what it means (or doesn't) in your family, and appropriate ways of sharing/discussing (non)belief.

Just a thought.

Who am I? The parent. And I am absolutely the last word on what is appropriate to give my child on Halloween and every other day of the year. I don't care if you take comfort in the bible or not, my children were not exposed to that superstition and old wives ' tales until they were old enough to filter it and realize what it is.

I have never been easy going when it comes to my kids. That said, if they came home from trick or treating with a bible or a koran or anything else, I would decide if it was something I wanted them to have. If it was they could keep it. Good for you, but i simply don't agree. Someone who would be presumptuous enough to do something like that needs to be told it is inappropriate.
I would be upset (deeply pissed actually) because it would be a direct attempt to indoctrinate my kids and a slap at my freedom to raise my kids in the religious beliefs that I choose. However, I wouldn't wait to get it home to get rid of it. I always went with my kids trick or treating, so it would go straight back to the giver on his doorstep, along with a lecture about not foisting his superstition on other people's children. I would feel no obligation to be polite to someone like that.

Kids want to play make believe, and the young ones think getting candy is part of the game. Some asshole decides its the devil's holiday and he has decided to take it upon himself to teach the kids differently.

This reminds me of the elderly neighbor lady who used to be a dental assistant and would hand out tooth brushes instead of candy. My sisters and I wanted to skip that house, naturally, but mom made us go and made us say thank you. Damn ity mom! Teaching us manners and all that!

Okay. It's no fun when someone doesn't seem to get the gist of the holiday but kids also need to learn that not everybody sees things the same way others do and that is no excuse not to be civil and polite.

Besides, you can sneak out of the house later with your bag of eggs and TP.

I read the topic of this thread when it first came up and didn't really have the time or give a damn to reply.

I make no secret of the fact that I think that our modern day bible is a waste of paper. I was all too exposed of the 'teachings' within, as a child, and came to realize that I certainly did not need it to raise morally sound, loving, wonderful human beings. My adult children are those things and a bazillion more, and that stupid book had very little to do with it. I only say very little because I actually did meet their father at church.....if you only knew how really funny that is.

Yet, given my lack of respect or give a damn about that book, I have to say with all sincerity would not be upset at some old fart handing them out to little kids. Yes I would think he was a crazy old fool on a fool's mission. But I wouldn't be upset and I wouldn't be snatching them from the hands of my kids.

I don't believe in book banning. Not even a book I find basically worthless. I also don't believe in forbidding children to read books. I actually prefer they do read them and bring their questions to me.

Knowing my kids, the books would have ended up tossed off into a corner when any other uninteresting clutter until I got fed up with kicking it around and tossed it.

I just don't get what all the excitement is about, to be honest.

I would have thought you were an ass, just like I did the ones who handed me religious flyers or political ads. Then I would have thrown your flyer in the trash with the rest and gotten down to the business of candy. No drama needed.
