My pediatrician always said... If you keep track of what they eat, by the end of the week, they typically take in all they need.

Baby formula is made from a base of cow's milk.

This toddler formula is nothing more than marketing for lazy parents.

My son only got jarred baby food when we were out and I didn't have a food processor available. He cut his teeth on garlic bread, and ate whatever we were eating, although his was pureed with a little broth.

Anyone remember when they came out with the "toddler" finger foods? You paid twice as much for cheerios that were specially labled for toddlers.

If the kid gets hungry enough, they will eat. I think, as others said, parents nowadays are letting their children run things. Explains a lot about our kids today.

Add to that the fact that in much of the world children are breastfed past the age of two (which gives them the missing nutrients that they aren't getting from their food).

Children are often picky eaters because they are allowed to be. Now if there are actual food allergies involved, that is a different story, but even breastmilk will provide the missing nutrients that those foods the child is allergic to would normally give them.

Providing the mother isn't eating any of those foods that child is allergic to. I had a prem baby that was so allergic to my breast milk that it nearly killed him. Basically he was allergic to dairy products, gluten's, nuts and anything with tomato in it. To continue feeding him I had to go on a gluten free, dairy free, nut free and tomato free diet and believe me it was tough but when your child needs you to do this you simply do it without question.
Whatever you eat, you pass that on to your child trough your breast milk. You can very easily poison your baby if he has allergies.

I haven't commented too much on the formula debate, as I am very pro breast feeding and very anti formula of any kind.

My son breast feed until he was three, though the last 8 months it was more a comfort need as opposed to a nutritional need. About once a week or so he would climb up on my lap and pat my breast. At the time, I was breast feeding my daughter, who decided around 14 months that she was grown and wanted to drink out of a cup like non babies.

In other words, both of my kids pretty much weaned themselves when they were ready.

I breast fed for a really long time - my sister came along two months before I turned 2. My mother learned that goat's milk was easier to digest than cow's and we had goats until I was about 15. I never developed a taste for cow's milk and it was quite some time before I liked cheese.
