The Democrats of yesteryear were the Democrats I was referring to.

And by "Democrats of long ago" the author means the Democrats of the 1960s, such as klansman and Bill Clinton mentor J. William Fulbright, Albert Gore Sr who voted against civl rights, etc

Robert Byrd, who was a Grand Dragon in the klan, died a lifelong Dem who served in the US Senate for the entire latter half of hs life

And so on

This is the type of statement that Politifact.com would call Mostly False. While it is true that it was the Democratic party that was pushing for black subjucation during the civil war and reconstruction, such a fact has little contextual value as the Democrats of yesteryear and the Democrats of today are disalike on every level. This statement is not used to point out an interesting foible of history; it is used in order to connect modern Democrats with the Democrats of long ago who pushed for slavery and Jim Crow laws, an inherently dishonest tactic.

Ironically, this repugnant former element of the Democratic party actually migrated to the Republican party in the early half of the 20th century. These politicians were called the Yellow Dog Democrats, and merged with the Republican party when their compatriots began to embrace civil rights.

Those are government programs.

Shit. Even "Bring all the troops home TODAY" is ending government expense.

"Cutting Spending" is a pointless phrase unless you qualify it with the proposed spending cuts. For example, when I talk about retiring the B-52 fleet, it's a very specific thing.

Here's the point. You want to reduce spending. Fine.

But not one dollar gets cut from social services without a dollar getting cut from the war department. If the 99% need to make sacrifices, so do the 1%.

You want to save a trillion on social security? You cut a trillion from defense first.
