hausboy -> RE: Do you feel doctors under or over diagnose recovery times? (11/4/2011 6:02:17 PM)

OP: While surgery may be an "exact science," recovery times are highly variant both on the procedure, the patient and sometimes...good (or bad) luck. In the best case scenario, the patient follows all aftercare guidelines to the letter, no infection occurs and the body heals according to the projected timeline, which I would imagine is based upon similar surgeries and patients with similar backgrounds. Unfortunately, sometimes even when the person follows all instructions and doesn't do anything "wrong", well..... shit happens. Infections can occur, complications can develop, the body can simply take longer to heal. I had a major surgery just one week apart from my best friend who had the same surgery. I took a lot longer to recover than he did for the initial recovery. 5 months down the road, I was fully recovered--he developed an infection and subsequent complication. Any recovery projection is just that--your body may have its own healing timetable. If you don't believe you're making progress or you have concerns (which it sounds like you do) your best bet is to discuss with the surgeon who operated, and find a good Physical Therapist who can give you his/her opinion on how soon you'll be back to work. good luck!
