well McQueary won't be coaching tomorrow. They pulled him due to threats. I don't think they'll fire  him but I do think he'll resign.

As ugly as this PSU thing is now, it's entirely possible that what we've seen is only the tip of the moral bankruptcy iceberg

We've had several majorly heated discussions here at work about this. I finally had to create imaginary scenarios, using their own friends/family as examples, for the block heads to half ass 'get it'. I still do not believe they do.

"Oh poor Joe, being used and abused, figure head scape goat......."

It seriously makes me want to hurt people......badly. Aka.......my Ving clip.

mons, you are a bit confused, I think.

That DA declared the case "unfounded" in 1998. He went missing in 2005.

Definitely cannot blame them. Im curious what will happen to the team. Can the NCAA actually overlook the fact that the people in charge were the one's responsible in one form or another?

NCAA president Mark Emmert said Thursday that the national governing body would look into whether Penn State had broken NCAA bylaws in the child sexual abuse scandal that has toppled coach Joe Paterno as well as the school's president and athletic director.

"Regarding the ongoing Penn State criminal investigation, the NCAA is actively monitoring developments and assessing appropriate steps moving forward," Emmert said in a statement. "The NCAA will defer in the immediate term to law enforcement officials since this situation involved alleged crimes. As the facts are established through the justice system, we will determine whether Association bylaws have been violated and act accordingly."

..........

If the NCAA looks at sanctioning Penn State, it appears it would include looking at NCAA Bylaw 2.4, on "principles of sportsmanship and ethical conduct," which calls for "intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants . . .. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program."

This broad bylaw typically has been used to regulate behavior such as trash-talking during a game. It appears to be unprecedented to use the bylaw to penalize an institution over ethical conduct. But this obviously is an unprecedented circumstance that has unfolded in State College.

Im torn on this. Its not "fair" to make the students who had nothing to do with this (so far). Yet, its also not "fair" to allow he school to bypass the laws that govern the school.

I would think Tazzy that the NCAA rules would only pertain to sports and in particular football. This is a criminal investigation of individuals that does not involve the football program in any way.

Actually, it may include the NCAA if they broke any of their rules.... rules dont just stop with the players, they also include the coaches.

But Tazzy they only apply to the coaches when sports are involved...This is a criminal investigation of individual criminal actions... At least my opinion but time will tell.

Screw the school.  They allowed illegal and immoral activity to continue for years.

The football players will be fine.  I assume the more talented ones will transfer to other colleges, and they'll be welcomed with open arms.

Personally, I think that this is a lesson for athletic programs that grow to the point where we all forget what college is supposed to be like, what its purpose should be.  If I were the NCAA, I'd shut the football program down until they can prove they are able to operate properly.

Did you read the statements from the NCAA President?

"Regarding the ongoing Penn State criminal investigation, the NCAA is actively monitoring developments and assessing appropriate steps moving forward," Emmert said in a statement. "The NCAA will defer in the immediate term to law enforcement officials since this situation involved alleged crimes. As the facts are established through the justice system, we will determine whether Association bylaws have been violated and act accordingly."

You may wish it were that cut and dry.... but I dont believe the NCAA agrees with you.

I have to agree, DS. Did this involve former students? were any of them victims? were any of them participating in the abuse as well?

I fear they may not have any choice but to close it down until all these questions can be answered.

I’m sure not going to defend the governing body of the school but they have taken the appropriate steps…finally. The football program will be just fine as long as they don’t allow any of those involved to remain with the team or on the payroll.

It would be tragic if any blame were to fall on the innocent and I think the NCAA will think the same.

I don't think reputation means anything to the NCAA... The school is going nowhere... the football program will continue... this will all be forgotten in a few years...and if Penn State is lucky enough to have a good coach they will continue to prosper as a program.

Most thinking people can separate the heinous crimes committed and the people responsible from the football program and the thousands of students, teachers, and athletes at the school.

You actually believe this will be forgotten in a few years? This case wont even be finished in a few years. Two years just for the grand jury. Unless all those involved plead guilty.. which they should... this case will be dragged out for years to come.

Which is why the pulled McQueary from the field and put him on administrative leave, right? And what do you think will happen when those who were supposed to be in charge of the school also fall beneath the guillotine? For you to insist the school had nothing to do with this is obviously a coping mechanism for you. Im glad its working.. too bad it didnt work for the victims.

This incident will cause new rules to arise... not only in schools, but in legislatures, the Educational Department and the NCAA itself. As far as scandals go, this one wont be forgotten for a long, long time.

Tazzy stop trying to tie my comments into me not having compassion for the victims...it is beneath you. When faced with answers to your questions you can’t rebut you take off on tangents.

We...or I… am strictly talking about the NCAA’s reaction to Penn States football program. I doubt you will ever see McQueary on the field again with Penn State.

As for as the football program is concerned these crimes will be put behind them and they will be remembered as a crime not as a fault of the football program.
