dollparts85 -> Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/10/2011 7:30:50 PM)

For the past 11 days or so, my left eye has been tearing up constantly and dripping down my face. It burns a little and at first it kinda felt like there was something in my eye but now it doesn't. There isn't really any redness or anything in the eye. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before or has any idea as to what could be the cause. I was thinking it may be medication related as I started two new medications about a month ago. (losartan potassium and oxybutynin) and they both have dry eyes listed as side effects which I know can lead to excessive tearing...but it's only in my one eye. Another thought I had was that it may be related to my new glass which I got the day the symptoms started. The prescription changed in the eye that is bothering me. If it continues through Monday, I am going to make a doctors appointment but I'm not sure if I should see my primary or an eye doctor? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ok, what makes you think excessive dry eye leads to tearing? Logic says the opposite.

Anyway, I would guess it isn't related to your new meds at all and know it has absolutely nothing to do with the new glasses.

Have you considered Pink Eye?

Start with your eye doctor and let him direct you from there.

Oh and don't wait. These are your eyes. Untreated infections can cause scarring of the cornea which can cause loss of sight.

Google says "Sometimes, a person with a dry eye will have excess tears running down the cheeks, which may seem confusing. This happens when the eye isn't getting enough lubrication. The eye sends a distress signal through the nervous system for more lubrication. In response, the eye is flooded with tears to try to compensate for the underlying dryness. However, these tears are mostly water and do not have the lubricating qualities or the rich composition of normal tears. They will wash debris away, but they will not coat the eye surface properly."

I thought maybe pink eye but it's not red at all...so I don't know. I will see if I can get in some place tomorrow.

I had something similar happen when I got new glasses. One eye produced tears constantly and I had eye strain. Went back to the optometrist and the prescription was changed. Had no more problems.

When was the last time you had anal?

That's what I'm wondering...b/c he changed the prescription only in that eye...and it started the day I got the glasses.

Wear the old glasses.

If it doesn't happen then go back to the same place and TELL THEM WHAT TO DO. Remember they work for you. What you might need is maybe not the prescription for optimimum visual accuity in their environment.

This science is more complex than most optometrists understand. Thing is, it's still hard to find a good one, because the opthamalogist is a surgeon, and while he mey understand a bit more about it, it doesn't make him perfect. The optometrist should have the knowledge to prescribe you some lenses, but at what range ? Far or short ? Or do you need bifocals or progressives ?

I actually have the same problem if I look at the PC screen too long. It does not occur in my right eye, which had the cataract operation last year, wait, it was in March. But it is fine with it while the left eye suffers. However my operation did not go totally well so I am not letting them do the other eye until it gets really bad, and it ain't. Yet. See you in five years.

Question - does artificial light bother you more, like the monitor or flourescents and such, or sunlight ?

T^T

dollparts85 -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/10/2011 11:16:05 PM)

Sunlight seems to bother my eyes more but I've always put that off to the fact that I'm indoors most of the time. LOL

MstrDennynSlave -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/11/2011 9:40:41 AM)

Actually, excessive dry eyes does lead to the eye/s tearing a lot. I have an autoimmune disorder that causes my whole body to be dry. And I always felt like there was something in my eyes. Then I tried eye lubricants to help with the dry eyes. My family dr sent me to an eye specialist. He said that when dry eyes get severly dry, they do tear up constantly.

And sunlight always has bothered your eyes or just recently? If always, probably just a sensitivity. If new, that is a symptom of infection.

Also, "Pink Eye" doesn't have to involved reddening.

While Termy has a great point, not all of us are as willing to take risks with our health as he is. Hope somone was able to see you today.

dollparts85 -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/11/2011 1:27:15 PM)

Sunlight has always bothered them.

I wasn't able to get in today. *sighs*

Wearing my old glasses to see if it makes a difference. I think it might be helping...not positive yet. We'll see.

Duskypearls -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/11/2011 4:33:29 PM)

It might possibly be Conjunctivitis (or Keratoconjunctivitis) Sicca, which is an inflammation of the cornea. It can be in one or both eyes. Symptoms can manifest as very dry eyes, or very teary eyes, among others things. Might be worth checking it out.

dollparts85 -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/11/2011 9:15:20 PM)

Woot. Switching to my old glasses appears to completely fixed it! Thanks so much, peppermint and everyone else. Eye is back to normal. Guess I should have posted sooner! haha

You should still see your eye doctor on Monday to confirm what happened. Plus if it is the new prescription, he needs to fiure out what is wrong and change it.

Just saying, these are you eyes, and you need to be sure that merely changing your specs was the only problem.

bemyslut -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/12/2011 9:06:07 AM)

sounds like you have a corneal abrasion.....would need an opthamologist to determine that (or access to flourescin dye and UV light)

Changing the prescription of your eyeglass wouldn't give you the sensation of something actually being in your eye ( It burns a little and at first it kinda felt like there was something in my eye but now it doesn't. ). Eye glasses only bend the light to a different focal point on the retina.

Excessive tearing, a foreign body sensation, and pain are classical symptoms of an abrasion. The good news: most abrasions are self limiting and heal on their own

dollparts85 -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/12/2011 1:09:37 PM)

I'm still going to go in next week. Will probably end up getting my old prescription in my new frames.

Termyn8or -> RE: Excessive tearing in left eye. (11/13/2011 10:53:29 AM)

I looked at your photo and I can tell that you are not nearsighted, at least to any great degree. At your age you're not presbyopic so therefore you are either farsighted or near neutral. If neutral that means your glasses correct astigmatism, which affects visual accuity at all ranges.

What alot of people don't know and even an optometrist may miss is that astigmatism can be different at different ranges. Mine is because there is some tearing of the lens'es suspensatory fibers. The best way to describe astigmatism without a trip to wiki is this :

The eye focuses this :

\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\

at a different length than this :

///////
///////
///////

Sometimes astigmatism is caused by an anomality in the shape of the eyeball or a corneal abberation, in these cases it is constant. But if it is caused by the lens itself or it's suspension, it is likely to change at different ranges because that is when the tension on these parts varies. Usually it is the magnitude rather than the angle that varies.

I don't remember exactly how to decipher the numbers, but there is OD and OS. OS is your left eye. There will be a number first, that is the lens power, a positive number lens corrects hyperopia and a negative number correct myopia, which are farsighted and nearsighted respectively. Next come the numbers for the astigmatism.

There seem to be some strange reasons for astigmatism to change, for me, now that I notice it, it seems to vary day to day alomst. Some days are better than others. there must be some factors I just don't know. I'd bet that could be true for alot of people and if so - get your eye exam on the wrong day and it could be off.

Wiki has a pretty good page on this if you care to read through it all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyeglass_prescription

It's an advantage to know about these things, how your body is. Like you might try to learn some things about feet to discuss with your foot doctor. Or learn things about sound to talk about with your ear doctor and so forth. Why do I know about optometry ? My whole family wears gllases, contacts or gets Lasik. One of my actual phobias almost is of being blind. Therefore I have studied a bit about it.

Actually, I think people should not get new glasses every year. I say get them when you need them. If your eyes start watering alot, or things are blurry then get an exam. If you have your old prescription (you should keep all of them) you can see what changed. If the change is minor and you just went in for the hell of it, you might just want to stick with the old prescription. Of course they do wear out eventually anyway.

I really hate to bring up the fact that they are out to make money. I don't mean to actually make an accusation here but the doc is the one who writes down those numbers, no way in hell anyone could ever know if even he intentionally made a mistake. Again - no accusation, just realize that it is possible.

When I went back to the optometrist after my problem with new glasses I was checked out again for free. Then I was accused of answering the "is A or B better" questions wrong. They couldn't, of course, have mistakenly checked the wrong box. (being sarcastic here) However, I did get a new prescription and was able to get the new script put into my new frames free of charge.

Most glass places will not honor a prescription that is more than 6 months old. So even if you love your old prescription they will not make you new lenseswith that script just because you like them. You do need that new prescription.
