The thing is to start taking them well in advance, I started taking them as soon as I knew I would be flying

Oh, without a doubt its best to keep those in your system. But one must also be careful about supplements that arent water soluble. Airborne has Vit A and E that arent soluble. While the levels are low, too much and it could cause problems.

And, yes, Im curious about the Zicam one as well.

Anyways, sorry about the derail.

I'm not familiar with Airborn, it's a brand that seems to be available in Europe, I tend to rely on suppliers of supplements that check their products thoroughly so I don't have to worry that one batch has a high content and the next one fairly low, most of it I try to get from fresh fruit but in the winter often supplement with slow release vit C, so I just started a bit earlier.

But Vit E is not water soluble anyway...

You are correct LadyC--vitamin C in and of itself does not cause renal calculi; increasing Vit C will increase oxalate production, thereby increasing the susceptibility to calculus formation in those individuals predisposed to the condition...its been a decade+ since I sat in biochemistry and memorized these pathways/diagrams

The thing is, if you have a predisposition, you will have noticed long before your 30's. There has been a bit of a panic around vit C in the past few years, but most healthy people simply excrete too much of it through the urine with no side effects. Also it depends very much on the person and the current lifestyle or circumstances how much vit C you need, smokers need a lot more of it, stressed people or athletes need more of it, while it won't cure a flu or a cold, it can help your body to deal with it.

I'm not suggesting that people take vit C pills by the handful, but in my case, I think it's prudent to take a slow release vit C pill in the morning. Mind you, all I'm doing is trying to give my body some help, so I'm in top condition and therefore less in danger to pick up something during the flight or the airports, like giving up coffee (which made me a bit grouchy for 2 days but then it was fine), I'm not relying on a wonder drug or expecting spectacular results immediately, just giving my body every help I can so I'm not prone to infections. My friend thinks I'm over cautious, a surgeon I talked to said it can't harm and when it comes to organ transplant patients one can never be too careful.
