A Lawrence city inspector cited a number of residents for litter violations for placing political signs in their yards.

Thse are all about people putting up signs in their own yards or improprieties of politician nothing about posting political ads on private property with out permission.

You asked for signage laws being enforced by any municipality against any political organization for improperly placed signage.

I guess you accidentally on purpose neglected this one, "—2009 mayoral candidate Bill Thompson was hit with a $619,000+ fine, Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio got a $300,000+ bill" I'll chalk it up to your advanced age and long term recreational drug use.

Actually spaz, I think this topic has gone well. A lot of people who have contributed to this thread have done so in a very open minded and positive way. Most people can see both sides of graffiti and even you admit there is a huge difference between proper graffiti artists that work within their own strict ethics and mob gangs that just hit anything and everything with spray cans.

In London and places like Bristol, local government has created whats called 'legal walls'. The trouble with this is, local government retain the right to remove anything on these walls that they deem too political!!
IMO the whole point of graffiti art is, it challenges what is happening in our nation.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: graffiti (12/8/2011 2:40:54 AM)

That's a hilarious concept! Remove what's too political? Guess it depends what side you're on.

It's like any other advertising. You can't put it up without the permission of the property owner or tenant.
That includes public property
Would you want a work crew to show up in your front yard with post hole diggers and put an "Eat at Joe's" sign up because it was their right of free speech?

Political signage is just advertising.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Same with sidewalks, Road Rights of way, etc. Some municipalities ignore their own rules (especially for incumbents for some reason) but a lot don't.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: graffiti (12/8/2011 5:31:20 AM)

I'll guess they'll just have to go the route Courbet took. When "avant-garde" first came into being - the Academy wouldn't take his work, so he had his own showing, and poof! Now solo shows are the norm.

All that rigid control does is generate creativity outside the lines.

It's a damn shame it has to be controlled in areas where it's allowed but if it wasn't, you can imagine the fallout when it was revealed that some artist had pocketed a few hundred to paint what amounted to advertising on a space that was supposed to be reserved for art.
We'd all like to think it wouldn't happen but when a man has a hungry wife and baby at home and the power is about to be turned off and someone offers him a few hundred bucks...............

I requested you to tell us if you would shoot someone posting a political ad on your property without your permission as you claimed you would if they were a tagger.
I also requested you cite anytime these laws have been enforced against politicians or political parties. For the entire history of the u.s. you have only been able to find three.
Unless you can produce numbers comensurate with the number of ads placed without the property owners consent you have failed.

No, tommy lad, I said I would make a phone call and get an apology and immediate removal over political signage.

As for only finding 3 where fines were levied, there were somewhere in excess of a million hits when I googled the subject. I declined to post all million. The three that I put up as copy n paste were 3 that you had seemingly deliberately overlooked when you cherrypicked the info you put up as they were in the same paragraph. Again, were you being deliberately obtuse or are there other problems afoot?

The laws are in place. If municipalities choose not to enforce them, then that isn't My concern. Every municipality where I have lived from around 10,000 to well in excess of a million people has done so.

Google is your friend. Use it before posting and you will look less ignorant next time.

I love seeing good graffiti on the trains when I am sitting, waiting for them to pass.
I just picture the folks who do it as mellow arteests, not angry folks like the OP.

Same here, especially while being stuck behind a railroad crossing waiting for the freight trains to pass.[:D]

As for only finding 3 where fines were levied, there were somewhere in excess of a million hits when I googled the subject. I declined to post all million.

You posted five cites that were not related to the discussion and one that listed three cases where the offender was fined out of gazillions that wer not. Thus making my point that these laws are not enforced.

The three that I put up as copy n paste were 3 that you had seemingly deliberately overlooked when you cherrypicked the info you put up as they were in the same paragraph. Again, were you being deliberately obtuse or are there other problems afoot?

the only problem afoot is your inability to post cites that validate your position.

The laws are in place. If municipalities choose not to enforce them, then that isn't My concern. Every municipality where I have lived from around 10,000 to well in excess of a million people has done so.

Then you should be able to post proof of such.
The fact that you do not care is not relevant. The fact that the laws are not enforced was my point.

Google is your friend. Use it before posting and you will look less ignorant next time.

You were the one who posted cites from google that were not relevant to the discussion so it would seem that you might want to consider your own ignorance.

Each article I posted was one of many that had sometihng in it that supported my claim. I can't help if you cherrypicked the parts out that you did.

You are either being deliberately obtuse or deliberately misleading. Which is it?

Regarding busting a cap on a tagger. Let me give you a short lesson in small town politics. The county mayor is an old HS friend of mine. The town mayor is my stock broker. The fire chief came by for a cup of coffee yesterday afternoon and to ask if I had any more info for him regarding an arson investigation I had helped him on. I had a beer last night with my state rep who was until recently speaker of the house here in TN. Police regularly drop in for coffee or just to chat. Are you getting the picture?

If I'm defending my property late at night. All I have to say is "It was dark, there was something in his hand as he approached"
Within 24 hours, all anyone will be thinking about would be. "Oh my god. It was a gang member. Was he Crips or Bloods? What kind of drugs was he planning on selling at the Jr High 3 blocks away?"

Right or wrong. That is how small town politics work.

Unfortunately, in the minds of the average person, you get lumped in with them.

Not saying it's right or wrong. Just saying what it is.

When five out of six of your cites are invalid it seems pretty obvious who is being misleading.

Just callin it like I see it little one. Your ignorance will once again be excused.

As for your asinine claim. Theres a big damn difference between protecting property and 'murder with impunity' Exaggerate much? This isn't England where someone can break into a house and cut their hand on broken glass and the homeowner gets castigated for creating a hazardous condition.

Now pick up your bong and go have a nice hit or 3 and things will be alllll better until your next Govt check arrives.

Your claim is that you would shoot a tagger. Then you give this scenario where all of the power structure of your state cover up your murder of a tagger...that is beyond silly.

Now pick up your bong and go have a nice hit or 3 and things will be alllll better until your next Govt check arrives.

The check always comes in the mail on the first.
The drugs they send ups...They also gave me an aero-med vaporizer so I would not have to use the bong.
I am counting on you to stay employed.
