Using your cruise control in the left lane of the interstate around here should be good for at LEAST 10 lashes.

outlier -> RE: Sentenced to ten lashes for driving car. (12/8/2011 12:14:27 PM)

It appears the woman had the bad fate to be caught up in
a political battle among the powers that be.  When the elephants
fight it is the ants that get trampled.

"Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge
not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a
campaign to break the taboo.

Making Tuesday's sentence all the more upsetting to activists is that it came just two days after
King Abdullah promised to protect women's rights and decreed that women would be allowed
to participate in municipal elections in 2015. Abdullah also promised to appoint women to a currently
all-male advisory body known as the Shura Council.

The mixed signals highlight the challenge for Abdullah, known as a reformer, in pushing gently for
change without antagonizing the powerful clergy and a conservative segment of the population.

Abdullah said he had the backing of the official clerical council. But activists saw Tuesday's sentencing
as a retaliation of sorts from the hard-line Saudi religious establishment that controls the courts and
oversees the intrusive religious police."

Aside:  This is a serious issue with serious possibly international repercussions.  It is much
bigger than personal drama and/or infantile Me, Me, Me.  It is a topic which has ramifications
worthy of serious discussion among adults.  Are you sure you didn't post it here by mistake?

The last time I saw a vid of a lashing, it opened up the "criminals" back, actually couldnt look after the first two,
I agree with Outlier, The thought is that a woman is likely to commit adultery or have sex if alone in a car without a chaperone.
Working thru womens groups, amnesty, Human rights watch is probably the best way to "help" because politically withthe uprisings and emerging "democracy" its a lot harder to see things moving for the better fast enough for eastern tastes.

Anaxagoras -> RE: Sentenced to ten lashes for driving car. (12/8/2011 2:46:52 PM)

The trauma of ten lashes could conceivably lead to the eventual death in rare instances. There was also a report done on the impact of women drivers in Saudi Arabia recently which raised the deeply troubling prospect that there will be no more virgins there in ten years time: http://frontpagemag.com/2011/12/05/driving-out-saudi-arabias-virgins/

quote:

A self-described “scientific” report issued by Muslim scholars has determined that within ten years Saudi Arabia will have “no more virgins” if the ban on Saudi women driving is lifted....

Apart from the apocalyptic vision of an extinct virgin populace, the scholarly report also claimed women drivers would “provoke a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce,” as seen in other Muslim countries that had allowed women the right to drive.

Empirical proof of that latter claim was offered by Professor Subhi when he recounted his own personal experience sitting in a coffee shop in another Arab nation. According to the horrified Subhi, “All the women were looking at me. One made a gesture that made it clear she was available… this is what happens when women are allowed to drive.”

Its surprising to think that its such an intensely conservative society that even the nikab is seen as insufficient by some because womens eyes are seen as a source of temptation!!

There's probably footage on YouTube.

I know this is a partial hijack but, I need to pose a question:

If any of you remember the big bru-ha-ha, a few years ago about Islamic women not wanting to remove their face coverings (I'm sorry I don't know the correct word) for their drivers' license photos. Their argument was that their religion forbade it.

So, here's the question: does the Islamic religion forbid female drivers or just some twisted extremist interpretation?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

If this would have happened in Libya there would be bombs TODAY ! This just proves it's not what they do, it's who does it.

I mean oil will get you an ass whipping but enough oil buys you out of almost anything, especially if you're an "ally".

What's up with Womem's rights in China these days, anyone know ? NO, because why ? If you don't know why there is no sense wasting the keystrokes.

Hooray for the king -- one small step for woman...

Politesub53 -> RE: Sentenced to ten lashes for driving car. (12/8/2011 4:00:17 PM)

The king was responding to a large public outcry according to press reports here in the UK.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Sentenced to ten lashes for driving car. (12/8/2011 4:01:41 PM)

Well at least he responded to it, instead of saying "whatev."

Politicians here respond to public outcry, too -- it doesn't detract from it.

Politesub53 -> RE: Sentenced to ten lashes for driving car. (12/8/2011 4:04:20 PM)

Forgive me for going off track but western politicians dont always respond to public outcry, or Blair wouldnt have joined Bush`s Iraq fiasco.

10 lashes seems light. Just think of all the damage she could have done! Seriously though screw theocracies. Glimmer of hope for improvement doesn't cancel out all the years they've oppressed.

Islam was set up over a thousand years ago.  Cars have been in existence since around 1900.

I've read (I don't know how true it is) that Mohammed's teacher was actually a woman, and that Islam actually doesn't contain anything misogynistic, but that the madrassas have perverted Islam for their own ends.
