The girl didn't make it, her brother is still critical.

Woah...... that's horribly sad.... :(

That's so sad.

My brother's ex girlfriend is mentally ill and wasn't able to complete the paperwork for various kinds of assistance. My mother tried to help her and S pulled out a stack of paperwork inches high. My mother drove S around to various agencies - I don't know if S ever succeeded. Last I knew S was in a homeless shelter.

I'm sure the people in the Texas story did everything by the book, but when someone applies four times and her children come in shoeless, more than "by the book" needs to occur.

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. How awful to be that desperate and feel so very very hopeless.

Weren't relatives coming down after the shooting? I mean where were they before it got this bad.

I heard the boy died this morning. It is very sad the government and her family let it get this bad.

What an insufferable brat you are.

Might it have occurred to you the possibility that any relatives could have been financially insufficient to the task? Or otherwise were in circumstances that prevented their positive contribution to the woman in her plight? Of course not. You wouldn't be you otherwise.

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people who come upon such troubles are indeed helped out by family, and we never hear of it. When we do hear of it it's because the family and extended family financial structure has collapsed, a situation we are seeing more and more of in a country that emphasizes individual achievement at whatever expense, your fellow citizens be damned if that's what it takes.

My parents and a host of others have carried the burden of family troubles engendered by some within being congenitally stricken by various hearing, sight, and speech problems. Paid for all of it themselves, many thousands of dollars over all of their adult life, with mediocre income. Now that the financial industry has ruined my father's retirement and ensured him a life of constant worry in his last days (by way of lowering market value of his house well below pre-bubble price, and holding financial value of 'safe' retirement-focused investments stagnant for 4 years), we are just now having to turn to government assistance concerning one son/brother. All the siblings have financial burdens of their own, as having even 'normal' kids is quite costly.

I'm not even going to venture into the territory of where this country could be in the absence of so many outright subsidies and tax credits to the largest industries and corporations, which those of your ilk so perversely consider as being part and parcel of the individualistic mantra.

Just be aware that the true individuals are suffering from this fishwit cowboy notion 'individualism' as you sit there in your panties and flub your spitting lips with your finger.

I read both children died from their injuries, one the next day and the other the day after that. The father saying his goodbyes. Truly sad.
