Because of my photography addiction, I always have lots of photos saved. One very cool, and always a hit as a gift is this nifty little project.
Depending upon the person, I go through my photos and pick those they would like, to print out in different sizes. I do it here at work on the big digital colour printer but many people have photo printers, or can get them printed relatively inexpensively. Don't rule out colour copiers as they are getting better and better and most printing companies and copy shops can output from your digital file.
Then I go to anyplace selling craft or art supplies (even our Walmart carries it) and get a few sheets of black foam core board. You will also need a spray adhesive, a place to actually spray the adhesive that the overspray will not ruin anything. (keep in mind the mist travels far and wide). And a very sharp little craft knife. (I got a pack of two that the blades can be broke off in bits as they dull...for around $1) And a decent pair of scissors.
From here there are many directions you can take. I've done cutouts of figures that I've put a little piece on the back so they stand up. And I've also done a 3 D mural.
Either way, you have to cut the photos to the size and shape you want, then cut the foam the same size, use the spray on adhesive to attach and voila.
Usually because I have so many photos I do a 3D mural. I put one blank sheet of the foam core down, then start choosing photos, doing the cut and attach to pieces of foam core, placing them loosely on the bigger piece, make sure you let a few kind of stick over the edge to make it more interesting. Then when I have enough photos to fill the bigger piece I start deciding which I want to pop out and how far. Then you take your smaller scrap pieces of foam core, making sure they are smaller than the ones with photos attached and create levels of the photos. So some will pop out an inch or so, over lapping a bit some of the photos that are more closely mounted, etc.
It's a very personal piece of wall art that you can do just about anything to. Have fun with it. You can also stick other items on it to jazz it up, making it more personal and colourful.
