It has come to My attention that the jump in physical actitivty for those not previously involved in the LS affects diabetes, notably the body's requirement for insulin/sugar in response to the increase in activity. I would like to hear from Aanyone who can speak directly to scene play with pancreatic diabetics. What can be done to responsibly avoid sugar lows, what to tell one's non scene friendly specialist, etc.

I don't have diabetes myself. However a Dom I know who is a very dear friend of mine has diabetes.
Essentially he keeps cookies when he scenes. From my own knowledge I would assume an apple or something would be better but I guess the cookie tastes better?

Diabetic here but only a type 2 ...i dont use any form of medication just watch what i eat and drink and orange juice is good to have around or something else sweet to drink when the sugar gets too low. I think they say drinking something sweet gets to thru the system faster?

I am not diabetic, but I do find that scening can mess up my blood sugar or my sub's at times. When I know we will be doing something intense like electroplay I keep Gatorade and grapes or oranges on hand. Since I'm often not at home when playing, I keep a few granola bars, raisins and some of the mini chocolate bars in my toybag. I rarely need them, but when I do, I am very grateful they are there. When you or your sub is sick and shaking is not the time to be looking for the nearest source of sustenance.

I have hypoglycemia and my blood sugar can drop quickly without warning. If there is a means of keeping something cold I try to keep Naked Juice around. It's a very heavy, all natural juice made from fruits. There is very little unnatural sugar in it.
If I can't have the juice around I try to have Luna bars with me. I always have one in my car, backpack and purse.

Have something sugary nearby. If they do "crash" fast enough, you don't want liquid, you want something powered to put under the tongue. Those candy Pixie Sticks are near perfect.

One thing you need to do is make sure they check their blood sugar every so often. If they are using a pump, thing probably won't get extreme, but I know the girl I played with was very self conscious about wearing it during a scene. It just depends on everyone's comfort level. And frankly, if they don't feel comfortable talking to you about that, are you ready to play yet?

Also, as a side note, people who deal with diabetes generally have reduced circulation in the extremities. This means you have to watch bondage related activities or anything else that could interfere with circulation.

Enjoy.

Eat a meal that includes slow release carbs (pulses, brown rice/bread etc.) a while before play (an hour or more I would say depending on teh self knowledge teh diabetic has of their absorbtion)

Test blood sugar before play (every responsible diabetic should have a test kit)

Keep glucose tablets to hand or a liquid sugar solution (these get into teh blood stream very quickly and so can help prevent somene going down)

Depending on teh length of the session have some slow release energy snacks available (fig rolls, dried fruit, oat bars etc)

Make sure you know what the physical symptoms of your play partner are when they start to go down - sweaty skin? clammy and cold? pupils dilated? lack of concentration? bad or short temper? As a sub you are duty bound to be responsible for your own safety as much as your Dom/me - learn what is out of ordinary and how to spot it - if you safeworded in this circumstance cos you were concerned about the health of yr Dom/me I cannot see that they would ever have an issue about that as it does ultimately affect your safety too. as a Domme you have to reconise the responsibility for the person in your care and NOT assume given reactins are due to sub space (VERY IMPORTANT as some of teh symptoms could be confused)

If you are especially concerned make sure that there is a panic button or alarm device close to hand and that, until you both understand how play affects the diabetics body functions and responses, that both of you can get to it if need be.

Try testing blood sugar throughout a session or 8 to see how play affects sugar levels as it can be easy for adrenaline or endorphins to mask other symptoms. (As Dom/me you could even include this as part of play on yr sub)

Beware of damage to a diabetic - many do NOT heal well and will suffer surface infections and slow healing - taking weeks or months to heal a small scratch. Nerve damage is a risk as are circulatory problems. DO NOT TAKETHESE LIGHTLY - gangrene is a serious problem and amputation is a common occurance for long term diabetics. If you wound a diabetic sub check their healing FREQUENTLY and do NOT hesitate to get medical advice or help if infection occurs. better still recognise that they may have limits inflicted by their condition that have nothing to do with personal limits and these should be respected if you are both to stay healthy, safe, etc.

Hope this helps - my ex was diabetic from teh age of 3 and we were togeter 18 yrs so I have some experience.

I have played with diabetics...They are more likely to have circulation issues also. Be careful with bondage. Don't do it too tight. The hands above the head thing can be a problem and increase the likelyhood that a problem can arrise. As everyone said before about the blood sugar level bottoming out. But, from the problems I have seen the bondage issue has had more trips to the hospital for diabetics.

A local Domme has a boy with diabetes .. they love suspension and whip play.. I know she oils his body down before they play and sort of wraps the whip around him as oppsed to snapping and cutting the skin.. she has asked the dungeon munchies crew to keep fresh fruit on hand and some protiens for after play .. he seems to me not that I watch everything that goes into his mouth... but anyhow to have a small plate with low fat high protein meat like ham or turkey and some fresh fruit .. I have also noticed they rarely stay long after play..

I am a type 1 diabetic and I have to inject two types of insulin several times daily. My endrocrinologist suggested that the best way to deal with hypoglycemia is to simply carry a small packet of sugar with me (he even told me to "borrow" some from a restaurant's coffee area.) So I keep some in my bag for "just-in-case"

I am diabetic and the best thing is orange juice....but i can feel if my sugar is getting too low and i tell my Dom, sure He is worried, but after awhile i got to know the signs.

I always keep a pack of Dextrosol in hand and I've made sure to tell my Dom where it is in case i need it.

On the safe side, i have a few packs, at work, in my car, my relatives and regular friends, they are all aware of what to do.

This way i am reassured and they are too.
