M says that the only thing that really helped him to quit smoking was Chantix and he is going to go back on it next month. He's apologized in advance for his forthcoming mood swings, lol.

Has anyone who has used Chantix had success minimizing its side effects? Esp nausea, night terrors, and psychological effects like paranoia and manic depression. (He's dictating to me and I'm thinking EEP!)

Thanks,

KK

For my sister-in-law, it made her suicidal.

I think going through a medically supervised smoking cessation program that incorporated behavioral modification would be a much better/safer!! alternative, but that is just my opinion.

Perhaps Wellbutrin with the patch along with behavioral?

Topiramate, Nortriptyline and Clonidine are sometimes used off-label for smoking cessation along with others:

Chantix made me suicidal too. I quit smoking for a whole 6 months, but it really wasn't worth the Chantix.

I'm actually amazed it is still on the market, since this very dangerous side effect is SO common.

We won't prescribe it and advise our clients against getting it elsewhere, and watch any who report being on it very closely.

It's awful. Just the nausea made me stop taking it.

It hasn't been easy, but I decided to tough it out and use the nicotine lozenges until I could break the habit--then the chemical addiction is only a few days, and it's easier this time. I actually believe this is the time I really quit.
Also, there's a great book by Allen Karr called "Stop Smoking the Easy Way," and it's something I think Doms could really do. It's a matter of deciding to conquer and dominate the urge. As a sub, I started looking at the urge the same as I do safewording--I just wasn't going to give in. <smile> It's working like a charm.

It's still on the market ? Well I guess if you commit suicide you don't smoke anymore so it is effective eh ?

I wonder if this will work for my sugar cravings?

Mental health, I'm a licensed therapist. So our clients may be more likely to become suicidal due to previously existing mental illness, but the rate t which chantix has that effect in our folks is alarmingly high.

Chatix has a few lawsuits in the works against them.

Yuo, if my situation with Chantix had been anymore severe I would have joined one of them.

At the time the medication came out depression and suicidal ideation weren't listed as side effects! So after awhile I kinda figured it out, but it made things very confusing for my docs.

It is one of those meds that really shouldn't be on the market.

Also the "alarmingly high" numbers I referenced in my last post, were nearly 100% of all of our clients placed on Chantix had severe emotional side effects and needed to be taken off the medication. (I write nearly 100% because I *might* be forgetting someone).

Sounds like a drug that might work better in a cocktail.

Any of the pros in here have anecdotes on sedatives, stabilizers or antipsychotics with it?

I actually haven't tried it myself, and those particular combinations wouldn't sit well with my body chemistry, but it does make me curious.

Health,
al-Aswad.

I know several who did quit with Chantix, and have been quit for a few years.

I know others who just couldn't take it, my self included.  It just gave me wake up screaming bloody murder nitemares though, no suicidal thoughts.

You mentioned on another thread that no one answered your question in the OP.

I think the posts of many telling you about back experiences may, themselves, be an answer.

Night terrors...

http://www.nightterrors.org/med.htm

nausea

There are many meds used to treat nausea. Many home remedies as well... peppermint candy and tea are my favorites.

paranoia and manic depression

There are medications to treat these. Not sure using Chantix with all the other options to help quit smoking that are available is worth it. All he can do is speak to his Dr about those.

Exactly, the best advice I can give about the med, is don't take it. I get that is what your partner wants, and perhaps the best thing is to negotiate what you are going to do if he flies off the handle (and the likelihood is high).

I know about 10ish people who have taken Chantix.  I think it is about 50/50 as far as side effects go.  If you get them, I don't know anyone who has been able to minimize them.  Just decide if you can live with them or not.

Actually....if it had been effective for him then he wouldn't have to go back on it to quit again.

Aileen, no one learns to smoke over night, no one learns to quit over night. Its a hard habit to break... some put the addiction up there with heroin. It can take many times before finally quitting for good for some. For others, they can put it down and walk away, never once looking back.

He quit for almost 4 years, the longest of any of the multiple methods he'd tried. He started again when he and his ex split up.

I know someone who has been off heroin for 10 years after using for 27...and he is yet to be able to get off nicotine.
