Google and Urban Dictionary have nothing for this, but from your context I assume you mean smoking?

It's old northern English, Smoke tabs, drink beer, shag birds. Even had it on a tee shirt.

When I stopped a few yrs back within 3 months I was 30 lbs heavier & felt like shit. it hurt my knees & back. I was working at a manual job so I was still active, a yr later I was 50 lbs heavier, I thought fuck this & started tabbing up again 6 months later the weight was gone. I'll take the big c over a random heart attack. That was my decision.

Death from a heart attack takes a few seconds. Death from cancer is slow and painful and treatments are poisonous and barbaric. With medical technology as advanced as it is, I don't understand why there aren't any harmless medications that speed up metabolism

And muscle does weigh more than fat so on the scale you will see an increase in numbers.  Measurements and measurement of body fat will be the actual indication of whether or not muscle is gained.

angel

Which weighs more?  A pound of feathers or a pound of bricks?  Muscle and fat weigh exactly the same.

The problem is relying only on the scale to determine body size.

mnottertail -> RE: Question to ex smokers (12/28/2011 10:56:26 AM)

in mass that is say cubically, (you are not an amorphous blob yet are ya?)  muscle weighs more than fat.

So if you gain muscle mass and lose fat mass you will shrink and weigh more (at least initially) and that alarms alot of people or causes them to become discouraged.

The more clear example would be which weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of gold, and that answer is clearly feathers.

Actually, a pound of feathers and a pound of gold still weigh exactly the same.  A pound is a pound is a pound.

Mass, I'm sure you know, is different than "weight."

Smokes have so many health risks beyond cancer...really debilitating stuff. Hence my personal campaign to have all my friends quit, so they will die of being old.

As Bill Hicks said.

None smokers die everyday.

Yeah I know it. Which is why I do not nag any of my smoking pals, I just let them know I wish they would stop.

Technically, a pound of feathers is heavier than a pound of gold.

A pound of feathers is 16 US oz or 7000 grains with a grain being approximately 64.8 milligrams.

A pound of gold is 12 Troy ounces which is 5760 grains. (Troy ounces are slightly heavier than US)

in all seriousness starting smoking is my only regret in life.

Under the force of one G mass and weight are the same. On the moon weight is less than mass because of less gravity. That is weight depends on gravity but mass does not. On Earth, weight is a convenient method by which to measure mass.

However muscle is more dense than fat, therefore one pound of fat is larger than one pound of muscle.

For some people larger is not good.

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: Question to ex smokers (12/28/2011 12:24:38 PM)

When I quit smoking in 1993, I was at the gym for about 2 hours a day doing a combination of stairmaster, bike and weight training. My motivation was #1 to not gain weight and #2 I could actually visualize all that crap leaving my lungs the harder I worked out.can

I tend to bulk up very quickly also, but you can think about it this way:
If it's a choice between gaining weight or starting to smoke again, fucking HULK OUT MAN!! Even if you gain a bunch of muscle mass, you have the absolute choice of making it temporary. I used it to my advantage for a few months, then I just decreased my weight and upped my reps for tone instead of mass.

It only took a few weeks (probably less) to lose the excess muscle mass.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Question to ex smokers (12/28/2011 12:26:01 PM)

When you stop smoking, your metabolism slows. That is not conducive to muscle gain.
She mentioned that she stopped drinking coffee, too. IIRC, caffeine induces thermogenesis by mediating the production and reuptake of the catecholamines (dopamine, norepininephrie, adrenaline, etc.).

That might have something to do with it.

kalikshama -> RE: Question to ex smokers (12/28/2011 12:58:10 PM)

Zyban (aka Wellbutrin / Bupropion) is a little speedy and has been found to be useful for both smoking cessation and obesity.

barelynangel -> RE: Question to ex smokers (12/28/2011 2:31:29 PM)

LL, then you don't understand the difference between muscle and fat.  If you don't you may want to look at a pound of muscle and a pound of fat and see the difference and why someone would rather be 150 lbs with a higher muscle mass than 150 lbs of a higher body fat.  This is why when people are working out especially with weight -- they are warned that their weight may go up, not only because they are gaining muscle but when the muscle heals it retains water to utilize it in the healing process -- so you may see the scale rise.

You can have twins where one is 15% body fat and another is 25% body fat and the one with 15% body fat more than likely will weigh more than the other twin because muscle weighs more than fat.  So if you have more muscle mass, it stands to reason that the weight on the scale may go up.

Please don't try and confuse people by insinuating a pound of muscle on the body is the same as a pound of fat on the body.  If you really think so -- do a comparison.  You utilizing semantics of a lb, however, if you have more body FAT, you may well weight less than if you have more muscle.  There are NOT the same outside the numbers on a scale -- however, the human body doesn't deal with ONE pound, it deals with many pounds and a combination of body fat and muscle.  If your body is gaining muscle and losing fat, you may find the scale rising.  If you are losing muscle and gaining fat, you may find it staying the same.

If the body was either all fat or all muscle i would say okay, but the human body doesn't work like that.  There is no just pound of fat or pound of muscle, there is a whole kitandkaboodle of what the number on the scale stands for, one of them being you may be GAINING muscle or the muscle is healinig etc -- which could even happen if you stress a muscle without actually working out.

OP, if you seriously thinking you are GAINING actual fat, instead of your body tripping out because you have stopped a whole bunch of crap, go get your body fat tested as soon as possible, then you will have a gauge of if you are actually gaining fat or its your body readjusting.

If you are exercising more you might be replacing fat with muscle and muscle weighs more.

Congrats on not smoking---I just lost my sister to lung cancer the day after Thanksgiving...she was pretty young and weighed 'healthy' 89 pounds.
