JAY STREET — S&M sex master John Hopkins had a pretrial hearing Tuesday in Kings County Supreme Court on charges that he enslaved and raped a 27-year-old woman who had responded to his Craigslist ad for S&M sex and then traveled from Wisconsin to Williamsburg to live with him free of rent.
Trial was delayed this summer after the victim left the city and was unavailable to testify, but still seems to be proceeding towards trial before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Patricia Di Mango.

Hopkins, a 45-year-old audio engineer from Williamsburg, is charged with dozens of felony and misdemeanor sex crimes, including rape in the first degree.

The victim reportedly admitted to police that the initial encounter with Hopkins was consensual and that the two had an online correspondence before she came to Brooklyn. However, after living in his Williamsburg apartment for a week in February, the victim reportedly called her mother, who contacted the NYPD.

Police found the victim chained to a radiator and curled in a fetal position in Hopkins’ apartment. Hopkins was released from jail in August on his own recognizance pending trial.

I feel slightly brainwashed by rabid feminists but some comments on the initial thread really bothered me, as they teetered into the territory of victim blaming.

The girl should of course known better to go to another state to live with someone she had never met, S&M or no S&M.

Whatever the agreement was, no means no.

I know for some of us who love safewords it comes out more like "Rubberchicken", but still.

Plenty of women for plenty of reasons don't run, and don't call the police.

She could have had no money to get home and this was the only way to stay off the street.

Coercion is still rape.

Great story true story that illustrates this. Kinky girl needs a ride home from a photoshoot. The guy says he'll give her a lift, later on he tells her that is conditional on her fucking him. And if she doesn't fuck him she's outside alone, scantily clad, in a dangerous neighborhood.

BDSM often viewed as being much nicer than it actually is.

She might have been thinking fuzzy handcuffs and french ticklers, not whatever the fuck he ended up doing.

Once again no means no, and rubberchicken means no.

Can't tell you how many times, especially with new people that their ideas of wtf was gonna happen were much tamer than anything I had planned. I either quiet things down, or stop the scene, otherwise I violate consent.

I agree with the above... to a point. However, as pointed out in the original thread, she had plenty of opportunity to notify others... anyone... a rape crisis center to get out of his reach... her mother, whom she eventually called... then after the call she returned home. The Judge stated consent does not always make it legal. I completely agree.

However, the story isnt as first stated. And its those lies that make her look bad. Woman up, accept your part, and be honest.

There is "blame the victim," and then there is also "the victim is to blame." This woman is now not wanting to testify. Does anyone really question why? Yes the argument can be made that she is afraid of her life being dragged through the mud, but the reality is she walked through the mud and is probably reluctant to have that pointed out.

If there is indeed evidence that they knew each other for two years, including *several* (2 or 3 or more?) meetings where they played, her story falls to pieces about the whole idea of her thinking she was just going to NYC to be this guy's live in maid.

If she did indeed stay with a "friend," as the defendant claims, that "friend" will be found and would have to testify. Her story falls apart again.

If there is more than one set of DNA found in that rape kit/examination, the defense's claim that she was attacked in the park gains credibility, and again, her story falls apart.

No means no, but that does not absolve this woman from being responsible for her actions. I don't believe she suffered from Stockholm Syndrome at all, and think that 8 days was far too short a time for that to even happen. She was able to leave to go to work, she was therefore not held captive.

There is discrepency as to whether SHE "escaped" and called her mother, or he called her mother to tell her that things were not working and she needed to come home, and then put her on the phone. Another easy thing to check. If he indeed did speak with her mother, and the mother simply was not happy about the relationship (27 year old girl/47 year old man), I could see her calling the cops.

There are far too many holes in this. This woman now being "reluctant" to testify after all of the defendants statements really doesn't look good for her. The whole concept that this guy should have *known* about her drinking problem or mental instability is bullshit. As others have said, in a couple of face to face "play dates" it is entirely possible for it not to be evident. In that amount of time, he could have thought she was "quirky" and "cute." After a few days of living in the same house, her true colors showed, and that "quirky, cute" thing is now obviously a problem. I could see her not wanting all of that coming out in testimony.

I'm sorry, but I don't see her as a victim here, and I am one who will more often than not, when these types of cases come up believe that the "dom" acted inappropriately and should be held accountable. What I see is a woman who apparently didn't like being "dumped" by someone so much older (and therefore *lucky* to have her at all) and lashing out.

So a man spent several months in prison due to an angry, unstable woman's accusations. He will never get that time back, and his reputation is forever ruined.

I agree with the side saying the woman is in the wrong and sent a innocent man to prison from the details I have read of the case.

Mainly
"After a week, the victim, who was working at an elite sushi restaurant, told her mother she was being held captive, prompting a call to police."

And

" His lawyer provided graphic emails she sent him, where she calls him "master," begs for abuse and claims she has a severe alcohol problem."
From the articles posted it comes across as a jilted lover, who has way to much power to fuck up the other parties life. I hope if more evidence comes out proving this, the woman faces a penalty for perjury.

I had a feeling it would end up like this. Based on what I've read, it was consensual, and I'm sorry he was in jail so long. I was wondering how high the bail was and found this:

"I cannot imagine there will be a conviction here," said Hopkins' lawyer Andrew Stoll, asking the judge to lower the $350,000 bail.

"I'm not denying that at some point and some time this abuse and torture was consensual," Supreme Court Justice Patricia DiMango said when refusing the request.

"There comes a time when [such actions] are not playful fun anymore and they become dangerous, criminally dangerous."

The judge appears to think at some point consent was withdrawn.

I do want to add something from a slightly different perspective. When I am corresponding with someone online (before ever even agreeing to meet, even for just a coffee in a very public place), I have quite a few questions that I like to ask them before I will agree to meet. And the surprising thing is, often, when I ask men if they have any specific questions for me, most of the time, they have absolutely NO questions for me (I am not exaggerating.) And I always find this deeply distressing. I understand that as a submissive female, I am concerned for my safety, and so I typically have a lot of questions. But why do men not think they also need to determine who they are dealing with on the other side? Do they not care about what brought me to the lifestyle? Why I might be interested in them in particular? Chatting with me somewhat to determine if I seem mature enough, sane enough, etc. to be going down this path with them. I hate to say it, but for a lot of self-described dominant men, a live woman on the other end of the line is all they seem to care about. And then they are surprised when they end up in a weird situation. My only point is who is the victim here? And which victim didn't do an adequate job of screening their partner before proceeding?
