JstAnotherSub -> Dry skin. (1/2/2012 7:52:13 AM)

Well, it seems that mother nature has tricks set up for us all our lives.  I guess it keeps us on our toes.

After cursing me with Auntie Flo, since the old age of 9, she has now allowed me to go without a visit for a few months.  Hopefully, this will not conjure the bitch back up.

As I rejoice and hope I am done with that bitch for good, I have to pause and scratch.  Seems Aunt Flo disappearing has made my always good, to the point of oily almost, skin, decide to quit producing moisture.

From head to toe.  Yes, even there!

So, any of you old broads (kidding!!) found solutions to this?  Good ways to hydrate your skin?  A way to return the moisture to "Yes, even there"?  Please share.

I am a pale freckled redhead, who can only use non scented, hypo allergenic stuff.

Thanking you in advance, since the brain may be the second thing to go!

Have you tried coconut oil,Safflower oil,  olive oil,  or jobobo oil or even almond oil- as you sound like you have sensitive skin, try organic?

I always use lotion and oil in the shower right after a shower while my skin is still wet.

Dry skin sucks but a lot of it could be your house also -- you might want to invest in a humidfier if your house is dry.

Someone posted on another thread about using a scrub in the shower. I use salt and baby oil... omg... absolute bliss! Sugar is more common. though with my diabetes, I though salt would be better.. however if you shave, that could hurt (great for the masochist)

As far as internally, water water water... and ky jelly :D

I may try some of the natural stuff.  After spending some time on Google and reading up, I think I am going to go buy some "Curel itch relief" lotion, and grease up well with it when I get out of the shower.

That, and go get a huge glass of water to drink.

tazzygirl -> RE: Dry skin. (1/2/2012 8:50:32 AM)

I just mixed baby lotion with salt and leave it in the shower. The salt doesnt dissolve, so I just scoop out the salt to use and replace as needed.

I am really really bad about drinking water and on top of that in the winter my house if VERY dry.  I never liked baby oil, i think it is from my days during the summer when we would slather ourselves in same to get a tan lol.  I find the natural oils absorbs into my skin so much better when its wet.

safflower oil is good because it doesn't have a scent, so you can mix it with your lotion and not worry about the combination of scents.

I like almond and sesame oil personally, it gives a nice well almondy sesamey smell and works well with any perfume i wear.

Also, be sure not to take boiling hot showers or sit in hot tubs, those will not help, and you may even want to rise off not wipe down with cool water after putting oil and lotion on.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Dry skin. (1/2/2012 9:13:14 AM)

I found a Lush brand massage bar in my cupboard, and I like them at night, though they do tend to be greasy (kind of the point?). I hate the feeling of lotion on my skin, but yes, my dry skin is even worse!

As for Down There, there are hormone suppositories that work well without messing up your hormone balance/creating side effects. Ask your doctor. A friend who was 70 said they made her like a 17 yr old!

myotherself -> RE: Dry skin. (1/2/2012 9:14:33 AM)

something I use when my skin (particularly on my face) is very dry is vitamin E oil.

Here in the UK we can buy it from a health store, and it can be used as a dietary supplement or as a moisturiser.

If you can't get hold of the liquid, then I have used the vitamin E capsules and just broken them to get to the liquid, and it works just as well.

My sister used it and hated it - I use it and love it. Can't do any harm to try!

Thats my downfall... I adore a hot bath... but my skin doesnt.

take lukewarm showers...not hot. It will dry the skin out.
Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated.
Use cortisone creams and lotions and always apply while still damp from the shower when your pores are still open.
use as little soap and detergent as possible and use ones that are for sensitive skin. Dove is usually highly recommended.
Add humidity to your surroundings.
Stay away from wool and lanoline which typically aggravate dry skin.
Eat plenty of greens, fresh veggies and fruits, fish and nuts which will add the needed nutrients for dry skin.

I have no idea who Auntie Flo is.

As for the dry skin, that may have various causes, at a guess vitamin deficiencies, hormonal issues or disease or medication. Using an ointment simply addresses the symptom. What one would really like to address is of course the cause.

I have too little information about you, and myself too little knowledge about the subject, to counsel you on the matter.

After trying a bazillion products and spending almost as many dollars I found Palmer's Cocoa Butter Dry Skin Therapy Oil.  This stuff is magical.  I use it right after a shower, it absorbs quickly and my skin is silky smooth.  It has a delicious scent, too.

Start on the inside! Diet has a huge influence on skin...have you considered taking omega oil, flax, or similar to see if that helps?

I will definately try some of the natural suggestions yall have recommended.  I did get the Curel Lotion I mentioned, and it is most awesome so far.

My kinda girl. Are essential oils ok - is it just artificial fragrances that bother you?

Are you familiar with the Environmental Working Group's cosmetic safety database?

EWG's Skin Deep is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products, launched in 2004 to help people find safer products, with fewer ingredients that are hazardous or that haven't been thoroughly tested. Skin Deep combines product ingredient lists with information in more than 50 standard toxicity and regulatory databases. The database provides easy-to-navigate safety ratings for tens of thousands of personal care products.

Some Curel products score quite well. They have nothing for the Itch product but you could look up the individual ingredients.

Water, glycerin, petrolatum, tapioca starch, cetearyl alcohol, peg/ppg-17/6 copolymer, behentrimonium chloride, dimethicone, isopropyl palmitate, propylene glycol isostearate, cyclopentasiloxane, ppg-15 stearyl ether, cetyl-pg hydroxyethyl palmitamide, bis-methoxypropylamido isodocosane, panthenol, tocopheryl acetate, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, methylparaben, propylparaben, benzalkonium chloride.

I like Everyday Shea Body Lotion, available at Whole Foods or online. It comes unscented, vanilla, or lavender.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Extract (aqueous), Shea Leaf (Butyrospermum parkii) Extract (aqueous), Handcrafted Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) Certified Fair Trade, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Palm Stearic Acid, Red Palm Oil (Elaeis guineensis), Essential Oils (scented versions only), Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Limonene, Ascorbic Acid

My sister gave me some Plum Island Soap Co Orange Ginger Body Butter than is great for especially problematic areas like hands. Available in 11 yummy scents including Naked (unscented)! Body Butters are made with only four ingredients before we add our scents! Olive oil, water, beeswax, borax. [Borax must be a preservative - paraben alternative]

I believe Auntie Flo is one's period.
