Apprently the turn out isnt all that the Republicans might have been hoping for. Republicans were hoping anti Obamaism and Tea baggers activism would add up to record numbers....so far the turn out is running at 2008 levels

Honestly, I've never quite understood the significance of Iowa, as many have won Iowa, but didn't go any farther?!!

You have an excellent point. I think I saw in the modern era, only 2 people who have won Iowa on the R side have gone on to get the nomination.

Me either.  I don't understand how Iowa became hub central.

I will say, Santorum piqued my curiosity, until he opened his mouth about birth control and a few other issues.

First reportable race.  The media's starved for results after eighteen moths of sound bites and positioning.

Besides being 'first' to caucus, they don't have any particular significance as far as I can tell. I guess it will depend on the outcome of the GE and which way the spinners want to spin things this cycle.

From a media standpoint, I guess?!!  Obviously doesn't have any significance as to who's gonna get the nomination, as again... many have won Iowa, but didn't go any farther.  Personally, I've been watching movies all night.

Just seeing Mitt lose after declaring himself the winner will be worth all the fuss.

Matters little that not everyone who wins Iowa wins the presidency. That could be said about almost any state and is meaningless.

Iowa is important b/c the candidates think it is.

As a gauge on whether or not they should stay in the hunt and continue to spend money, I would agree that it's important to the candidates. A mediocre or even a poor showing in Iowa isn't a death knell.. but it's a call for a few of the candidates to be prepared for some last rites, at least.

Apparently, a HUGE amount of money was spent in Iowa.Mostly by Romney super-pacs who don`t have any limits on how much they can spend. That alone shows what importance they place on Iowa.

The fallout: Bachmann's campaign is in disarray.  Her campaign manager hinted she might drop out, which she rebutted: http://news.yahoo.com/bachmann-tells-supporters-shes-staying-race-045117393.html  Rick Perry sounds like he'll drop out: http://news.yahoo.com/perry-reassessing-bid-iowa-caucuses-051033487.html

Mike, will there be anyone running against Obama and his brown shirts this time around or have they ..."taken care of" the competition?

Setting aside the Nazi reference, I think most of the competition has 'taken care' of itself.

Why risk murder when political suicide is so popular these days?

99% of votes in, Santorum leading by 4 votes. Hopefully, Republicans in other states are intelligent enough not to vote for someone like Santorum that wants to end Medicare. I shudder to think how many retired Americans will die if the Affordable Care Act is repealed and their primary insurance is privatized. Better pick out a tombstone soon if you have a pre-existing condition. Most Republican candidates don't want to make changes to the health care law, they want to completely repeal it. That means welcome back pre-existing conditions.

Now they're saying Romney pulled ahead. They have the mail in votes to count though. I still can't believe so many people voted for Santorum who wants to end Medicare and keep pre-existing conditions legal.
