"Bold Lie Turns High-Seas Run-In Into Dramatic Rescue"

"Fifteen Somali pirates were also on board Al Mulahi, crouched and cornered on the very vessel they had seized in November to use as their mother ship. They had knives, a pistol and four assault rifles. But they did not speak Urdu. For a moment, the captors depended on their captives. They asked their Iranian hostages what the American sailors had just said.

One of the hostages, Khaled Abdulkhaled, answered without pause: “They said they are about to blow this ship up.”

The pirates panicked. Their unity broke down. Each man hoped, variously, to surrender, find cover or hide."

My understaning it wasn't at all inadvertant, it was advertant.

outhere69 -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/7/2012 7:38:35 PM)

They did give permission to board, sounds kind of deliberate.

Owner59 -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/7/2012 7:47:22 PM)

It got mentioned in tonight`s debate.

They just thanked us.

Cool.

Hillwilliam -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/7/2012 9:23:02 PM)

With the sabre rattling that's been going on lately, the timing couldn't be better.

slvemike4u -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/7/2012 9:27:21 PM)

The only sabre rattling I have noticed has been coming from only one side of the aisle,As a matter of fact it seems that President Obama's thoughful, nuanced and layered handling of the situation has the Republican candidates bat shit crazy about the whole situation....they are reduced to discussing options such as covert assasinations during national debates...does seem to take the covert out of covert doesn't it?

The sabre rattling I was talking about was the Iranians saying "Dont bring your carrier back into the gulf or else".

Now a ship from that battle group rescues a bunch of their citizens.

Now that is ironic.   Serves them right.

It is ironic but it just might serve to calm things down in that part of the world.

I'm proud of our navy and I'm happy for those fishermen and especially for their families who had no doubt given them up as lost at sea. If they havent already, there's gonna be some happy reunions shortly.

As Huntsman pointed out, detente with the Chinese communists started with ping-pong.

This could be a break but I`m not holding my breath.

Just read that Israel and the US are discussing "triggers" that would prompt an attack on Iran.

It`s the right strategy.

Be the nice guys who want to make peace while being clear what the alternative is.A thousand times better than just being the belligerent guys who`s only focus is making war.

SilverBoat -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/8/2012 9:00:21 AM)

Maybe the incident will be a positive turning point of some kind? Social media might make it difficult for the Iranian hawks to suppress knowledge of what the US Navy did.

mnottertail -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/8/2012 9:02:14 AM)

Well, they didn't ...the head of the Military in Iran was grousing about it though, but what do you expect.  The politco-religious heads were damn nice and polite about it.

Sanity -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/8/2012 9:26:06 AM)

I think its great that our armed forces rescued those people [sm=applause.gif]

Why would you hold anything against the pirates victims, the individuals rescued, regardless of the country theyre from. Or put another way, why do you refer to the rescue as "inadvertent"

mnottertail -> RE: US inadvertently rescues Iranians from pirates. (1/8/2012 9:32:07 AM)

inadvertant means not intentional, so it seems your question to be a matter of lack of comprehension of a reasonably common word, it has no intent of 'holding against' or 'country of origin' in its definition.

Nice to be able to agree with you for once, Sanity.

I'm hoping for a thaw.  Iran's gotta lotta sway in the region, and I'd just as soon be at least a frenemy with them.

You fail to understand the question, and there isnt the time to try to explain it to you

The entire region has swung towards extremism in a big way of late, if the pendulum doesnt come back some soon... I dont know what.

But we might find out

he responded correctly
